First Lie Wins: Reese's Book Club: A Novel

Book club books generally don’t appeal to me but this novel was so hyped, I had to read it. Different plot than the usual suspense mystery. The cast of characters are well developed and it seems nobody is operating as who they say they are. Twists and turns abound. Secret lives and lies! Worth the hype and the read!

This is a really great book, different plot which I appreciated. Easy read, only reason I gave 4 stars is bc I figured it out too early which bummed me out.

If you want a page turner First Lie Wins is a smart, fast-paced thriller that hooked me from the first chapter. The story follows Evie Porter, a professional con artist whose life is built on secrets and ever-shifting identities. When her latest assignment puts her deep undercover with a seemingly perfect boyfriend, everything starts to unravel and the twists keep coming. The plot moves briskly, with enough suspense and unexpected turns to make it hard to put down, and Evie’s clever, morally gray character adds an extra layer of intrigue that keeps you guessing about what she’ll do next. What I appreciated most was the way the story balances tension and emotion. Even as the mystery and deceptions pile up, there are moments that feel genuinely grounded, especially in how Evie wrestles with her choices and relationships. The novel isn’t overly long, and it delivers its reveals in a satisfying way without feeling rushed or sloppy. If you enjoy thrillers with identity games, sharp plotting, and surprises that actually feel earned, First Lie Wins is a highly entertaining read that lives up to its Reese’s Book Club buzz.

I'd give 4 stars to the book iteslf. Is it a book spending money on? I'd give that a 1/2. So 3 it is. I wanted to check this out from the library, but my situation was time sensitive and there was a very long wait. It was a fun book. Worth the read, but definitely not worth buying and owning a copy. I'm picky about books that are worth spending actual money on though. If buying books is your thing..... This is a rather entertaining book. You do need a suspension of disbelief, but if you can get to that it's a really fun read. There are so many improbable/questionable things, but somehow the aurhor made me not care about them and want to take the ride. Characters are developed nicely enough. There are lots of twists, some cleverly moving the story in an interesting direction. Beyond plot, there is just something about the way this book is layed out that makes it fun. I love the timing of this book. The author managed to give me exactly the right information at exactly the right time. I figured things out just before I read it. So it was fun figuring it out but not so early that it became tiring and dull. This happened at several points throughout the book. It was actually pretty impressive how the author was able to work everything through the plot in the way she did.

Well written. Pay attention to the time lines

Such a fun quick read! I ADORE stories about women who overcome... well, everything. A lovely lead, cute boy, some more good characters and a too-fun 'spy' (James Bondy) type thriller set in the South! THANK YOU!! I certainly hope there are more to come. :-)

This was a book recommended to me by a friend. I had no idea what I was going in for other than it was recommended to me because I love heists. Absolutely incredible, crazy twists and turns. I love thrillers and mystery’s and this is now one of my favorites!

First Lie Wins sits right in that frustrating 4 to 5 tar zone for me. It’s undeniably engaging, with constant reveals, shifting identities, and plenty of “wait, actually…” moments that keep the momentum high. But there’s a clear tradeoff: the book prioritizes plot mechanics over psychological depth. If you’re looking for a fast, high-concept thriller with an unstable sense of reality, it works. But if you were hoping for a more layered character study on identity and deception, it may feel a bit artificial.

I did not like the main character much but found her interesting enough to continue. The romance parts engage one at the start. The plot really kicks up in the last quarter of the book and some unexpected things occur which was fantastic. I wanted to skim over the flashbacks and get straight to the present which I wanted resolved. But the way it is written makes sense in the end. The writing style was different to the style I am used to, the plot was covered fairly quickly which made each reading session, however short, quite satisfying. It is not a light read as the material is uncomfortable. I think I'll go back to a Jane Austen next. Overall I did enjoy First Lie Wins and would recommend it.

Even though I do not like thrillers this is a unique crime story. I could not lay it down... .Wonderful

Amazing book! Couldn’t put it down!

You need to use your brain while reading this, or it’s just me. I took serveren months to finish this book so I forgot a lot. But it’s a very very good story.

Eu tinha lido um outro livro da autora, um romance YA, há alguns anos e estava curiosa para saber como ela se ia trabalhar um novo gênero e faixa etária. E foi maravilhoso. O livro não perdeu meu interesse em nenhum momento e a história é muito envolvente. Já entrou para a lista dos melhores do ano.
