The End of College Football: On the Human Cost of an All-american Game

Shame on The University of North Carolina Press
Shame on The University of North Carolina Press for publishing this book.1) The authors appear to be ticked off faculty members because players did not come to class. Their perspective/bias is present in each chapter, which makes this book so much less than it could have been.2) The authors' sources of data are weak, limited, and biased. The data is based on the perspective of 25 fomer football players, only (maybe a few blogs and articles). Where is the perspective of others - physicians, parents, coaches, students, fans, media, and players who have been successful in their post-football careers, using the knowledge/skills they learned through their experience as players? Where is the perspective of the college presidents who enjoy the billions of dollars of revenue that college footballs brings to their university? Where is the actual research?3) The audience for this book is whom? I purchased it because I thought there would be a basis for the argument, but this is one of those regrettable purchases.I do not blame the authors for such a biased book -- I blame the publisher for allowing such a book to pass through the editorial process. Good publishers help guide the book, challenge the author's assumptions, and serve as thought partners throughout the development of the book. This could have been an interesting book about a lucrative business with an enormous customer base. Sadly, it is just another opinion piece.
