You can adjust the brake levers up or down. Raising the brake lever such that it is on a plane with the handle bar makes the little one access the brakes easier. Honestly, the hand brakes are much better than the pedal brakes, because the little one is still learning how to bike. It is much easier for their little brain to process the info by squeezing the brake to stop.
