Can this tolerate a normal metal hammer

I'm old school you never hit a wood chisel with anything other than a wooden mallet, of course that was when quality chisels only came with wooden handles. The other point is if you do not respect your knuckles or what the final job looks like go ahead and use a metal hammer [small head] rather than a mallet [ large head]. You cannot watch the the hammer head and the the work item at the same time. I'm sure Amazon can provide a cheap mallet for you to purchase. good luck Chris Yakes
