How does the material stand up to outdoor weather? Heat, rain, etc? Will it chip or flake off?

This will crack apart and Chip within a year. And it's not clay it's plaster and fiberglass with a resin like material over it. Worst piece of crap made. Not worth the money

Is it too heavy to keep on mantle?

I don't think the weight of it would be a factor. However, the dimensions of it might. Unless you have an enormous fireplace/mantle of course. I have a brick fireplace/chimney and I have one sitting on the step up to the fireplace, and I also have one outdoors, on the front patio. It's quite large... but easily located indoors, if you have the space. A mantle of an average to large size would not accommodate it. But again, an unusually large mantle might.
