The Solar Talking Bible can be charged with a Micro USB Type B cable and power adapter. The Battery Talking Bible can be played as long as the USB power cable is connected. Under the spine of the Talking Bible, there is a port where a USB cable can be plugged in. The Talking Bibles do NOT include a USB cable or power adapter.

does it require regular alkaline

The Solar Talking Bible does not take batteries. It comes with a built-in rechargeable battery that can be recharged either by placing the unit in direct sunlight, or by connecting a Micro USB Type B cable and 5 volt power supply. The Talking Bibles do NOT include a USB cable or power adapter.

how easy is it to change from one scripture to another?

I don't know of an audio bible that changes from scripture to scripture, this certainly doesn't; however, it does change from book to book in less than a second, and back and forth, and does the same with chapters. It is lightweight but of sturdy construction. The recorded voice is pleasant and soothing, perfect for scripture's listening. Love my bible.
