No, the guides are free to spin when in the retracted position. The plastic case that comes with the fishing pole is constructed of a hard clear plastic that will hold the guides in place when in storage. The hard clear plastic is drop resistant, we tested this many times.

The rod is not as flexible as say a fly rod but feel sure it be able to cast reasonably light lure .
