A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER by the author of All About Love ! โWhen truth teller and careful writer bell hooks offers a book, I like to be standing at the bookshop when it opens.โ โMaya Angelou Intimate, revealing, provocative, Communion challenges every woman to courageously claim the search for love as the heroic journey we must all choose to be truly free. In her trademark commanding and lucid language, hooks explores the ways ideas about women and love were changed by the feminist movement, by women's full participation in the workforce, and by the culture of self-help, and reveals how women of all ages can bring love into every aspect of their lives, for all the years of their lives. Communion is the heart-to-heart talk every woman -- mother, daughter, friend, and lover -- needs to have. Part of the groundbreaking "Love Song to the Nation" trilogy that includes All About Love and Salvation A grounding and inspirational look at the role of love in our daily lives. A must read for the modern woman by one of our most beloved authors and cultural critics. Review: A book for anyone with questions about where to go from here. - This author was recommended to me by someone who is in search for love, yet who is blind to it when it is all around them. We are blind to the fact that love doesn't need to come from another person, we are programmed at a young age to search approval from other people ( people pleasing). No Recognition for one's efforts is a blow to the psyche. It shatters our understanding of self-worth. There is a reason why its called SELF WORTH, we have to recognise and approve it for ourselves. What puts me in check is remembering that unless you pay my bills and life style, I don't need your approval or acceptance. It took along time, many years actually to move away from the concept of external approval and wanting to recieve it in order to feel wanted. I was only feeding into their needs, not mine. As I digress, this is a great book, heavy, real and hopeful. This is information I could have used earlier on in life (years). A hard line focus on the facts for my specific journey in life. Not all of us have or will experience the same journeys, so this isn't for everyone. I wouldn't consider this book "cold" and heartless toward men, its an eye opener to countless journeys already travelled. Review: A very important read - The book I wish I had in my 20s and 30s . Quite a revelation!

Written in 2002 and relevant in 2026. Buy and read and share
Written in 2002 but oh my is it resonating with me in 2026. Her language about how women discuss themselves and other women โ and how words really shaped our perceptions. The patriarchy is strong - but we women are stronger. As an example of an area discussed โ I remember โthe change of lifeโ being discussed by my grandmother and how we are now free to say menopause. She was writing about where I am now. I am 1/2 way through the book and thoroughly enjoying taking notes and saying โyou know, that is so trueโ while I read the book.

Liberating and powerful
A must read for every woman everywhere. You wonโt regret buying it, itโs a must read! Itโs healing and inspiring and liberating as women that we arenโt here to be of service to a partner, we are here to be. Uniquely, divinely, and unfiltered.

bell hooks is life changing, as usual
A life changing read for women and people socialized as women/girls/femmes. Filled with thoughtful insight and deeply informed theory presented in an accessible, useful, and affirming way. Highly, highly, highly recommend if it piques your interest.
