Part cookbook, part travelogue, Ikaria is an introduction to the food-as-life philosophy of the Greek island "blue zone" and a culinary journey through luscious recipes, gorgeous photography, and captivating stories from locals. The remote and lush island of Ikaria in the northeastern Aegean is home to one of the longest-living populations on the planet, making it a "blue zone." Much of this has been attributed to Ikaria's stress-free lifestyle and Mediterranean diet: daily naps, frequent sex, a little fish and meat, free-flowing wine, mindful exercise like walking and gardening, hyper-local food, strong friendships, and a deep-rooted disregard for the clock. No one knows the Ikarian lifestyle better than Chef Diane Kochilas, who has spent much of her life there. Capturing the true spirit of the island, Kochilas explains the importance of shared food, the health benefits of raw and cooked salads, the bean dishes that are passed down through generations, the greens and herbal teas that are used in the kitchen and in the teapot as "medicine," and the nutritional wisdom inherent in the ingredients and recipes that have kept Ikarians healthy for so long. Ikaria is more than a cookbook. It's a portrait of the people who have achieved what so many of us yearn for: a fuller, more meaningful and joyful life, lived simply and nourished on real, delicious, seasonal foods that you can access anywhere. Review: Diane outdoes herself this time! - This is one of the best Greek cookbooks that I have ever bought--and I have several! My family is from Greece, and I can tell you that these are authentic recipes of the Greek islands. It will teach you a very healthy way of eating by using fresh ingredients that are in season, and the author includes beautiful photos and stories about the food, people, and culture of the islands. Most recipes are easy to make, but may be a bit time consuming for those that are not used to cooking from scratch. No processed food here! Just fresh, healthy ingredients. I can't recommend this book enough. Review: Beautiful Book came Perfectly Packaged - This is a beautiful book, and though it was sold as Used-Very Good, it's in such perfect condition that it is the same as Brand New. It came perfectly packaged in bubble wrap inside a padded envelope. And what a gorgeous publication -- full of color photos and articles to introduce each section. Not just a cookbook. It's such a nice book that I'll want to be careful in the kitchen to not get it spotted up while making the recipes.

Bought two of these books as gifts and my friends raved about it!
Even though I returned this book, I am giving a good rating because I have previously bought two of these books as gifts and the recipients raved at how great it is. My copy had folded pages and smeared ink, so I returned it. I’m sure I will order it again in the near future because of the positive feedback from my friends about the tasty recipes and the interesting History of the people of Ikaria.

Lovely Cookbook
This is a beautiful cookbook full of lovely pictures and great information. Someone who is seriously into learning about and preparing Greek food should own this book and I highly recommend it. However, for a person who has a more casual interest in Greek cuisine, this book is too full of difficult to source ingredients and time consuming methods of preparation to be truly worthwhile.

Delicious healthy food!
I have a lot of cookbooks, many sit on the shelf, but this one I am using every week. I am a home gardener and thought I knew how to take advantage of my homegrown vegetables. I am so excited to find many new, healthier, way to cook the summer's bounty. Every recipe I have used has been delicious. I am making some substitutions, yellow squash for zucchini, garden greens for foraged ones, mushrooms I can get at my farmers market that aren't exactly the same as they have on the island, but that's to be expected with this kind of cookbook. I am especially pleased that the food tastes so good without the cheeses that I have used so much in casseroles, and great for my vegan daughter and my own commitment to eating less dairy. I highly recommend it to cooks who are willing to do the prep for scratch cooking. Oh, and the bean recipes are really excellent!

Beautifully laid-out book with gorgeous photos, but...
I love Greek food and was so looking forward to using this classic cookbook. However, when I thumbed through the gorgeous book, I found that far too many recipes called for ingredients that are not readily available. I live in a city of 250,000+ foodies and there are several "international" groceries, but I suspect one would need to have easy access to fresh seafood, particularly squid/octopus for this book to be useful.

Amazing in so many ways
I’m in love with Mediterranean cooking and have some cookbooks but so far this has surpassed them all. Beautifully written and well made (the actual book itself as well). Full of wonderful pictures and writings and recipes. Very well done ❤️

Hardly any pictures of the recipes
I've counted 136 recipes in this book, and only 46 have pictures. I returned it for that reason. This book could have been so much better if it only had more pictures of the recipes. As an avid home cook and cookbook collector (70+ cookbooks owned), I still don't understand why cookbooks continue to be published without enough pictures. Not having a picture of a recipe can almost guarantee that I will never make it.
