It rolls as you push your foot back and forth over it.

can you microwave it for heat and freeze it for cold?

It is for pressure application only not for thermal. You can heat it up or freeze it but it won't change what you do with it

how do you keep it from rolling out from under the foot??

Ideally you should be standing when using this roller, to put some pressure on the foot.
