Paintings of J Allen St John: Grand Master of Fantasy : Korshak, Stephen D., Spurlock, David J.: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: The Paintings of J. Allen St. John: Grand Master of Fantasy. - J. Allen St. John belonged to that turn of the century generation of commercial artists who were also well-trained painters – as a consequence his illustration work was technically well executed most often in oil paint. His work will forever be associated with that of Edgar Rice Burroughs, as he provided the first illustrations for “Tarzan” and “John Carter of Mars”. This paperback volume makes an excellent reference and introduction to his work – it's copiously illustrated with examples of his book and magazine covers – mostly of the fantasy subjects he was best-known for, but also with examples of more diverse subjects. A really nice book to leaf through and certainly of interest to those who value fine illustration work of this period and subject. Review: Grand Master of Fantasy indeed. - This book includes a fabulous collection of paintings by J Allen St. John - one of the true greats of the golden age of American illustration. J Allen is best known for his work illustrating the Edgar Rice Burroughs novels including the Tarzan and his ERB work is well represented. A large number of the artists pulp and magazine covers are also included. Accompanying the artwork are a series of essays and these are interesting enough but we are really here to luxuriate in the beautiful paintings included. This is a fine coffee table type book that you can and will dip into over and over again. Its perfect, I recommend it highly.

Grand master
A nice tribute to J. Allen St. John, a fantasy artist who inspired other generations of artists. There are over 170 paintings, featuring works for Tarzan, John Carter, covers for magazines and many more. The paintings are nicely composed, filled with adventure and action. Simply the best examples of fantasy illustration back then. It's easy to see why so many artists are drawn to them, including Frank Frazetta who's clearly influenced by his art. There are also good essays and interesting quotes throughout the book, to let us get a glimpse of his life and career. Nice book recommended to fantasy artists. (There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

The art of J. Allen St. John envokes action, strength and beauty with every stroke of his paint brush as he went on to create so many masterful paintings. You will be struck with awe and fascination the first time your eyes touch each page of this book as you are drawn into a different time and a different place. You will see the artistic depth of his work as well as his ability to capture the tension of the combatants who are caught in epic struggles to survive. The book selected paintings that illustrated the depth and variety of J. Allen St. John a reflection of a lifetime of his work as well as a legacy of an artist that will live on. The Paintings of J. Allen St. John: the Grand Master of Fantasy lives up to its title. A worthy addition to your art library.
