Unbelievable value
I own dozens of lights, I have owned dozens more and this Nicron N7 is a heck of a value. What’s more, it’s not particularly what I would call a “value light” either. It stands on its own as a quality light with great features that just happens to be a great value. My work requires the regular use of lights. In addition to that, I ride (motorcycle) and I am somewhat ‘outdoorsy’. I use lights ALL the time. There are MANY criteria to take into account when choosing the right light for the right job and, at the end of the day, priorities become a judgement call. There is NO perfect light so, in this case, maybe I value ruggedness over optimal usefulness. In that case, maybe I value portability over brightness. After years & years of using dozens & dozens of lights for numerous situations I have a starting point for light purchases. I want my lights to have a rechargeable power source that can be replaced with commonly available batteries. There are exceptions to every rule (my core lights for work are Milwaukee Red Lithium... judgement call on priorities) but I’m tired of going through tons of disposable batteries or being caught in a situation where I can’t use the light because I used up the battery & I have to charge it. The N7 meets that basic requirement. I have a rechargeable lithium 14500 battery in the light and a backup. In addition, in a pinch, I could use regular AA batteries which I commonly keep on me but, also, I could get anywhere. I can literally buy them at any gas station. That is the height of power source flexibility and the best of both worlds since the 14500 rechargeable lithium version gives outstanding performance due to output and the standard alkaline gives longer life with a lower output. The size is excellent. The brightness is excellent for the size. The battery longevity is very good considering the brightness and size. This light balances these three features exceptionally well. The build quality is very good. The light is quite sturdy. The magnetic base is strong enough and improves the usefulness of the light. The head, which turns to 90˚ and can be left anywhere in between does the same. The spring steel pocket clip enhances that usefulness even further. While I prefer a tail cap button I understand that the magnetic base makes this impossible and feel that is a fair trade. I like the button operation. It has a positive click & engagement even without perfect finger position & at imperfect angles. The 2 second hold for on & off decreases the likelihood of accidental engagement. Additionally, you can loosen the tail cap 1/4 turn or so to “lockout” the light so, if you’re carrying it in a full pocket, you don’t have to worry about accidental engagement. As if all that wasn’t good enough I have never seen a better button cycle operation. 2 seconds on, 2 seconds off, single click back & forth between high & low. It is straight forward & simple. It takes absolutely no deep thought & causes no confusion even if you haven’t picked up the light in 6 months. Strobe & SOS are a 4-5 second hold on the button. Light manufacturers could learn something here. Options are nice. Everybody loves options. WAY too many options & settings to cycle through creates confusion & wastes time when you don’t use the light EVERY single day. Well, even then it still wastes time & sometimes you need to see something RIGHT NOW. Another 3, 4 or 5 seconds cycling through options just shouldn’t be necessary. That’s a lot of features! What does all this mean? It means this is one of the best options I’ve ever seen for an EDC light. For daily work I have better options. Headlamps & lights with longer battery life & more secure mounting options. For trips & every day carry this light is perfect for me. It has the right balance of features to make it one of a few favorites for this purpose and this $17 light is among much more expensive company for that role. Just a heck of a value.

Little powerhouse
Several days of online research, comparing specs, reading reviews, lead me to the Nicron N7. This is to replace a 5 year old Nebo Redline 5620 which has served me well. I had originally wanted a light that used the 18650 battery but after seeing this and considering how often I carried the Nebo in my BB pocket I decided the smaller size would be better. I required a light with a magnetic base, at least 300 lumens, rechargeable li-ion battery capable, side light or rotatable head, and zoomable lens. This light fit all criteria except for the zoom, which I decided I could live without after seeing pictures of the beam pattern. The wide overall beam with a center hot spot would be suitable for my use. I tested it first with a standard AA battery then with a 800mah 14500 battery. The output on high with the AA battery looks equivalent to the output on low with the 14500. The magnetic base is strong and holds the light well. It is not easily bumped off. The head rotation feels smooth and can be left in any position between 0 and 90 degrees. Overall the light feels well made. The switch has a nice solid click that requires medium pressure to activate. Hopefully enough pressure to where accidental activation does not happen often in my pocket or backpack. The included o-ring in the box is actually a spare as there is already one installed on the light. I have included my 300 lumen Nebo in the pictures for comparison. This light cost about 1/3 of the Nebo so I think the value is great. Compared to other lights I researched, one of the nice, possibly overlooked features of this light is the way the switch operates. Many other lights make you cycle through ALL of the light modes, requiring many clicks to get back to the one you want. I like the way the N7 put the lesser used strobe and sos modes on a separate level accessed by holding the button for a couple seconds. So in normal daily operation, you only have 3 clicks total. High, low, off. I may come back and update this review after some time to report on battery life and durability. 1/19/2020 almost a year later with this flashlight and still loving it. It’s been dropped several times on concrete floors, no issues at all. I do carry spare 14500 batteries with me due to there being no indication of battery level. Light output stays pretty constant up until the last 30 minutes of battery life. Still highly recommend this little flashlight! Update: 07/25/20 ordered a replacement after my original died. I like the glow in the dark ring they added inside the head. Cool effect when turning it off. The really great improvement on the new model is the power button change. Now you have to hold the button in for 2 seconds to turn it on or off. Hopefully this should cut down on accidentally turning it on in my tool bag or pocket and running down the battery!

Excellent quality, but a few minor issues.
Excellent flashlight. Two second delayed power on.is an annoyance. When I want it on I don't want to have to think about how! Plenty bright with a AA Lion 1.5V, but works good with a 1.2V NiMh too. The right angle head is handy and similar to a military flashlight; useful when light is hanging on pocket. However, the head has no detent, so it easily gets out of position; VERY ANNOYING. If I rotate it straight I want it to stay there; same with when I change it to right angle. ADD detents! Also the hex shape of the end cap serves no purpose since when the cap is tight, the flats do not line up with the head. Loosening the cap to line it up with the head won't work since there is a switch in the cap used as a safety off when traveling. However, a few minor issues. 1) Out of the box the magnet popped off. Reglued it with Gorilla Super glue gel; AOK now. 2) Tested the strobe mode and it was tricky to get it OUT of strobe mode. With patience, got it back to normal non-strobe mode. 3) Suggestion: The rotating head needs a detent for straight and when at 90 degrees. It is too easy to move the head and annoying when the head has moved. 4) The clip is too weak. The flashlight too easily comes detached from the clip; falls off! Good way to lose the flashlight; NOT GOOD! Bought the headlamp headband for the flashlight. Works great, AND it comes with a belt carrier for flashlight. USE the belt carrier and NOT the clip which easily detaches. Carrier has a Velcro closer AND a Velcro strap for a belt loop. HOWEVER, Velcro for the belt loop is NO GOOD since it could fall off if the carrier caught on something. UPDATE: Used Gorilla gel supper glue and permanently locked the head at 90 degrees. No more fiddling with light when the head it gets bumped and rotates. UPDATE: Gorilla glue fails to keep head locked. Will break loose from glue bond. For use as a head mounted lamp the flashlight is no good. The beam is too narrow for use as a headlamp, and with the swivel head, it constantly gets bumped ou of position. Best to just biy a HEADLAMP flashlight.

Better Get One Now!
I'm writing this review after owning this flashlight for a short time, but I have to say that I'm blown away with how capable and really cool this little flashlight. I have owned several different flashlights and none has been anywhere near as useful this flashlight. If you have any kind of steel you can position this little torch and shine a lot of light where you need it. Under the hood, or over the fender to aid a tire change are why I have 1 in my car. This thing is so useful I'd want one in my car, pocket, drawer and you name a place you could use a light like this. That's why I just bought four more. Which I don't normally do, but I'm really afraid that it'll disappear. You know how it goes a company makes a really cool product and people buy a lot, and then they discontinue it. It's like they say " oh they're buying and loving this flashlight we better discontinue it". That's how I imagine it anyway. If you get this flashlight you won't be disappointed by it's abilities (tons of lumens) or it's compact size (1 AA battery)(you can get literally anywhere)--oh yeah it can swivel it's beam like an owl's head and stick to any piece of steel. There is one caveat though! I don't mean to complain, but it should have a lanyard. There could have been a rind with eyelet so you could lanyard from the side and not interfere with the magnet. I put a lanyard to the pocket clip, but it's not ideal. Maybe when they discontinue this model they'll do that. Kidding better get before this little gem ain't no more! I'm gonna!

Really hits the sweet spot for me for EDC
I'm a minor flashaholic with several 80-200$ 18650 lights. There all amazing in their own ways, but after a year I keep reaching for this one for EDC for several reasons that I'll outline below. - Price - Can't be ignored, it hurts to lose an expensive flashlight and I have done it a time or two. This one is easy enough to have a few around and even lend them out and not worry about it. - Brightness/Beam - It's easy to find lights with a higher lumen rating, but something about this beam is just right for me. it's perfect for indoor use without being dazzling and it throws just enough to reach out to 100 yards. - Simplicity - The more time goes by the more I appreciate not having to cycle through 8 modes (including strobe) to get to the one I want. This one is just High/Low/Off. In some ways Low/High/Off might be better, but it's never really been an issue. - Versatility - The movable head means you can set it on the ground and point it at any angle which is so useful. The magnetic base is a good feature too, but I haven't used it that often. - AA Batteries - For a long time I thought 18650 was the way to go, but I have a nitecore charger and a bunch of Eneloop AA's I use for other non-flashlight uses and I find using that system is more convenient and reliable for me than the random assortment of 18650's that don't work with every light. These NiMH batteries don't give you the highest brightness out of this light, but as I mentioned above the brightness has been perfect for me. - The switch - It may sound odd, but this is the easiest side switch to find out of all my flashlights. It sits on a flat side that is very easy to find without looking and the switch itself is rubber and protrudes out. I've had some rubber switches tear and crack, but that hasn't been the case here. I've also had protruding switches that were always getting depressed accidentally, but I don't think this has happened even once with this light. All in all, I would say get this light! It also makes a great gift.

Super Convenient, Good Brightness
I like collecting flashlights and added this NICRON N7 this week. Immediately out of the packaging, I was impressed with the build quality of this light. It's solid with excellent fit and finish. Size is convenient. Not the smallest AA flashlight I own, but easily pocketbable and clippable without noticing the weight. I installed a AA rechargeable battery (not included). To operate, note that you will need to press the switch for a couple seconds. Not a big deal, but my first thought was that I'd received a defective unit until I did the long press. Click again (short press) to switch modes from low, medium, flashing. Light output in low and high were quite good. Not as bright as the brghtest ones I own, but certainly bright enough for my needs. The differentiator for this light is the swivel head and magnetic base. These are features that you don't realize you need until it's not there. The swivel head and base means that it works quite well in the car as it can mount to the hood and oriented properly on the task. It also clips to a pocket and a cap. The light stays on through the full range of the swivel unlike a similar light that I own, which gives it a lot of flexibility. Battery life has been pretty good. After at least two hours of usage, it was still bright though slightly warm to the touch. I did not test the water resistance. Overall, I'm very happy with this light and plan to purchase another. Only wish is for different colors as the black finish is easy to get lost if dropped. I get the appeal of this "tactical" black, but I always end up putting reflective tape on my lights because it makes it easier to find if dropped.

UNRELIABLE light that CONSTANTLY FLICKERS, loses power and light.
I wanted to love this light, it has a great feel and could be a great EDC flashlight. It has a fatal flaw as it sometimes DOES NOT TURN ON, stay on, or FLICKERS with a fully charged battery. I will include a video to show what I mean. It has decent brightness for the price point and a nice anodized aluminum case with a 90-degree swivel head for tight spaces. I have had it for a few months and have tried different batteries. It has not proved to be reliable or effective as a go-to flashlight. The ONE JOB this flashlight had it failed on. Again I could have received a dud, we will see. I purchased this in August of 2020 and this defect was present here and there initially but has gotten much worse with time. I should have returned it immediately, I thought it was the battery I was using, so I tried 3 different kinds of batteries to no avail. There is an off chance that I received a "dud". I will contact the manufacturer to voice my complaint and see how they respond. It has not been abused or used improperly. It just plain does not work consistently and that makes me not want to use it at all. I am kind of a flashlight and knife geek so the fact that this one does not stack up against my $6 go-to model from tractor supply company is a problem. I have more expensive lights, the 6 dollar model from tractor supply simply works, is bright, and has NEVER gone off or flickered with electronic issues. Still carry that, my gear light, my coast rubberized flashlight, and a few other models from amazon. Hope to see the maker come through. Also the rubberized button on the side comes off regularly and pretty easily, it is kind of a pain to get back on while in use, could be lost easily. All in all this could be a great little light with some quality control improvements. I will update to see if NICRON contacts me, I will update to see how their customer service is and if they support their product.

This is a good product, but not used as a primary flashlight...
Update to my Update: After receiving my second product, I reduced this back to 3-Stars. The primary reason was the inconsistency of the performance. The product seems identical in build quality, but the lighting/beam shape and brightness both on 1.3v and 3.6v batteries are inconsistent with my original purchase. It's a bit more narrow and the outer glow is larger. Also, the 3.6v difference almost seems insignificant in brightness and longevity compared to regular lithium 1.3v. Still a good light for its versatility, but what it excels in versatility, it lacks in brightness and battery performance. My recommendation for this product is really dependent on it's intended use. Update: Outside of some clarifying corrections on my initial review, I wanted to give this another update after more extended use... After more use, I bumped it up another star. I did actually purchase another one as well. The size/form factor and features are making this flashlight more useful than originally thought. This includes the lock-out feature by twisting the battery cap to ensure to disconnect the battery during storage or transport, more usage using 3.6v batteries, and finding this is more versatile than expected. I have not fully tested the longevity of this flashlight with long term use of 3.6v batteries, but I will be paying attention to this by the time I give this another update. This is a good EDC (Everyday Carry) flashlight, but I would never use this as a primary one. The size is great, but powering this flashlight on a single AA battery really limits you on anything outside lighting up a room or longterm use. The advantage is that AA batteries are incredibly common, so replacement is not an issue. I personally keep Energizer lithiums (1.5v) with me as opposed to alkaline. Lithium’s are less susceptible to temperature and has a better shell-life. It will take pretty much any type of AA-seized battery, but you will not get the full capabilities of this flashlight unless you use a lithium 3.6v. Read: You will not see 600lms on this product using traditional AA batteries that run on 1.2v - 1.6v. You will only get half at best. That being said... The compact size, built quality, angled head, magnetic end, price point, and varying type of batteries does give this flashlight a lot of advantages and versatility. It's size makes this easy to carry and the delayed on/off button does help from turning this on inadvertently. It's a good build quality with water resistant qualities. The con was the battery, but at the same time a big advantage as AA's are very common and very cheap. The angled head lets you do a lot of things with this flashlight including using it handsfree from a shirt pocket in conjunction with the clip. You can also use the clip to attach it to the bill of a hat. The magnetic end is great for more handsfree options especially when working on mechanical objects in tight places. Once again, the angled head in conjunction of this feature gives you a lot of options. And lastly the price. At this price point, you really can't go wrong. Overall, I would recommend this product, but don't expect the advertised lumens unless you invest in real 3.6v batteries for it. That being said, I would advise not wasting your money on doing that for this particular flashlight. Spend your money on another flashlight, if you're looking for high output.
