Q: Is the style/pattern authentic?

I would not consider it truly authentic b/c authentic japanese clothing is made out of a series of triangle and oblong pieces measured to the person. But this is a great pattern. I have made 2 of the patterns- one in wool and one in linen. Both are great.

Q: Can it be used to make a man's kimono? 48 inch chest.

This pattern is not a true Kimono, just a garment that has the Kimono look. It was designed for women, (with up to a 48" Bust), but I don't know how it would translate for a man. For an authentic Kimono pattern you should get Folkwear Pattern #113. The instructions are how to make a Kimono, and you should be able to make one for any size body.-AaronVogue Fabrics
