Im not sure what i was expecting? It says, 2x2x12, it says bundle?, It shows a RECTANGULAR block? I got what was exactly advertised for the most part, a 2"x2"x12" block of basswood. Absolutely no packaging or wrapper so it bounced around in the makeshift cardboard box it shared with a drill bit package and took a little bit of abuse at the corners. It will still work because i needed a 1 1/2"x 1 1/2" x 12" block,,,i can sand amazons or midwest's failures off! It will work but just know what your getting!Mike

It's a good block of wood, consistent, carves and seals excellently. I'm not sure why the star rating is for a "toy," but hey, as far as blocks of wood go, I guess this one is pretty fun.However - I've purchased this item twice, both times with a number of other items from other vendors through amazon, and several from amazon. My only complaint is that it takes much longer to ship than anything else - an order I placed a number of days later has shipped, and this still hasn't. Perhaps it simply hasn't yet been marked as shipped and is en route, but I remember that it took a good while for the first one to arrive when I purchased it just over a year ago.

I was very happy with the 3 ( 2 X 2 X 12 ) blocks of basswood to work with. I generally get 1.5" X 1.5" or 1.75" X 1.75", but I like the little extra size for some of my projects. I'll likely be back for more as I turn these into wood chips. The surfaces are smooth and finished without any noticeable blemishes.

Wanted to try my hand at wood woking . seen this and it did have two pieces of wood in the picture unlike I click on it now. Thought two pieces for $8 would be perfect. Was expecting two blocks of wood but only received one. Seams like a good piece of wood. Only complaint is its only one piece of wood instead of what is advertised.

Wood is fine, knocking it a star for the misleading listing suggesting you get two -- not a 'bundle', you get one,

Based on the product name "...basswood block BUNDLE", the product dimensions of "2x24x6 inches", and the answered questions where people said they received two identical pieces of wood, I was very disappointed when I instead received only 1 2x12x6" block. I feel like the description and name of this product is extremely misleading, and frankly I feel ripped off. At this price I would be better off just buying from a local craft store than from Midwest Products.Have not yet had time to carve the wood and rate the quality of the product itself.

*** I thought there were 2 blocks per order - I only received one***But as far as product review - this is exactly what I needed and the product itself is as described on Amazon. No complaints about the product at all.

Pretty wood like....

The basswood is clear grained and great for carving - although labelling it as a bundle and showing a picture with two blocks is a bit misleading. You only receive a single 2x2x12 block.

These blocks were great to begin carving with, although I would suggest you have a proper saw or someone to help you cut out the blocks into smaller pieces. I used a coping saw and that didnt go very well so I had to find someone to cut these into smaller pieces on the bandsaw. Otherwise this wood is great for carving. If you want to paint your finished carvings then great, otherwise this wood blotches if you stain it with a spirit stain. To avoid blotching, use a gel stain rather than a normal stain. If you want a solid colour, then go for paint, but that will hide the wood grain completely.

Firstly, this small piece of wood does not come cheap, so make sure you check the measurements first.American basswood is the best wood to use for whittling and carving as long as you don't want really fine detail. It is hard to find in the UK which is why I order from the US, but this does of course mean I have to pay a bit more. Basswood is known as lime or linden in Europe but be aware that the European wood is much harder than its American cousin, making it better for detail but tough work if you carve or whittle with a knife.This wood is decent quality, cuts, carves and sands easily and takes paint and varnish well. It can split, so make sure your tools are razor sharp. I recommend stropping regularly if you use knives.All in all I am happy to recommend this product, but make sure it is the right kind of wood for your project before you order!
