Papa Jeff
I was looking for a fun project for my grandsons and I to do. The sundials in this book were very simple up to a moderate ability required. All the projects were fun and allowed me to teach measurements, degrees of angles and researching a project along with the other basics. We found our location in the world and adjusted the clocks to be accurate at our location. We are even going to take the projects to our christmas fair this winter. The boys were very excited to see the results of their laber actually at work. I strongly recomend as a project book and a great learning tool.

great book
I got to book to learn how to make a sundial for my lake cabin, it is perfect, detailed and even has patterns in it. wow what a bargain, things (dials) I can make with supplies i have, and also Dials I can make with new purchased items, for that store bought look. I love it and would recommend this to anyone.

Good Basic discussion and source book
I bought this book and one by Albert Waugh (Sundials: Their Theory and Construction) because I had a casual interest in sundials and their construction. I'm not a mathematician, astronomer or a serious scientist so the technical side isn't as important to me. I did want to better understand how sundials work and get some ideas about their construction. While you can't judge a book by it's cover the cover of this book does give you a sense of what it's like. It's clearly not meant to be a scientific treatise and it's not highly technical. The information is written and presented to be within reach of the average mortal.I liked the book and it was as good as I expected. The book covers the basic theory of sundials and gives plans for some "easy-to-make" projects. This clearly isn't a stand alone book and I'm glad I also bought the Waugh book as a companion purchase. The two books combined were pretty much what I was looking for.

Good Day, Sunshine
The sun is up. These dials are just what's needed to pass the time as well as know it. The plans are just as billed. Thumb's up for this one!

Good starter book for first time dial maker.
This book is a well made book physically that gives very detailed descriptions and basic photo and hand drawn examples of the written word. It is as advertised and although it holds several types of dials for several lattitudes what this book is not is a book to teach you how to make any other type of dial , for any other latitudes than listed, than the dials in the book. So, I would not suggest this book as one for a person who is wanting to learn the mathematics of making a very location accurate dial by mathematic construction in wood; this is just not that type of book but, if you already know the mathematics this book could give you some good design and style ideas for a custom wooden dial. Also, the full size dial templates are a real help. In short, this is not a book I would use for reference; just a book to make somewhat accurate wooden dials of types described by the book.

Interesting ideas
Only 4 stars as the text suggests that you remove the templates from the book to use them. I wonder if the original binding was centre stitched (with staples) to allow their removal. The present binding (perfect) requires a surgical approach. That said, there are some very good projects described in this book. A little research to find your geolocation (latitude and longitude) and the direction of true north for positioning the finished dial. Tables exist that give the hour line angles for the UK There is also a graph called ;the equation of time' that gives corrections to the time shown to compensate for the elkpical orbit of the esrth around the sun giving greater accuracy to the indicated time. All these extras ca be found on the web.
