Yes, you have to use a specific nail polish. They have to be magnetic.

how long before to dry the nail polish?

As soon as you get the design you want on the nail ,you immediately put the nail in the dryer that is made for drying gel polish and let them dry the allotted time for the polish.

Which ones repel and which ones attract?

They don’t repel, they draw the magnetic color towards there area too create a pattern.

Does it have to be gel nail polish or can it be regular magnetic nail polish not gel???

This mainly works for any gel polish that's meant for it. Like cats eye, mind you the magnets are weak
