The Humble Pie

Such a cute book to help explain that children need to stand up for themselves and not let people take advantage of them. The two main characters Humble Pie and Cake are so cute and do a great job of teaching the lesson. Another wonderful book by Jory John!

Such a great book. I love the series and this one is great for the holidays when teaching how to except things as they are.

Funny book!

You could hear a pin drop in my second grade classroom as I read this story aloud. We talked about what it means to be humble before reading. It’s a word and character trait 7-8 year olds are not familiar with. They loved the friendship between cake and pie. In this story, pie and cake are best friends and pair up for a school project. Cake gets too busy with other activities to do the project with pie, who ends up doing the majority of the project on his own. He is use to being in the shadows of others, letting them take credit for his work, and staying out of the spotlight. He’s running out of time to finish the project and begins to get really stressed (and sort of resentful towards Cake.) He decides to go out of his comfort zone and have an uncomfortable conversation to Cake about it. Cake finally steps up to help, highlighting both of their strengths in the project and presentation, and ultimately altering Pie’s perspective of what it means to be humble. There are many lessons to be learned from this story for children of all ages. My second graders were thoroughly engaged and loved the illustrations too. This is my new favorite book in this series!

My favorite book series ever!! I pre-ordered this and could not wait for it to arrive. My kindergarten students saw it when I brought it in and couldn’t wait for me to read it. They love this series too. The Humble Pie book did a great job of teaching them about standing up for yourself when you feel like you’ve been taken advantage of and it was a great book about friendship as well.

It was a great book to read aloud with my kids. They all enjoyed it and also understood the message. We have read it several times in just the few weeks we’ve had it! Love all the books in this series

What a sweet treat of a book! My students are a huge fan of Jory John's books and I had to pre-order this for them. We read it together for the first time and we all loved it. The book is filled with hilarious and memorable idioms that were fun to explain to my students who are in third grade. It had the same plot outline as the other "Food Group" books which worked well for my students to remained engaged. The book also has rich vocabulary and likable characters that teaches children the important difference between being so humble where you remain in the shadows and taking credit for your own accomplishments. This is definitely another classroom favorite!

Love this book!! I was happy to add it to my collection in my classroom. The pictures are so cute and there's a great moral to the story.

Jory John’s whole food series is just so cute. It's packed with clever puns and playful humor that make reading aloud a joy. The wordplay is smart enough that even adults can’t help but chuckle, which makes this book perfect for family reading or classroom story time.

Very empowering book with a great message. Fun story before bed.
