The diameter is 1.57in, the height is 3.35in.

Although I suppose the water level should never get higher than the Valve can it be tightened to be water tight against the container it is installed?

The water level in our usage of this float valve covers the device. The float sits on the water (level) and is how the valve itself is actuated. Consequently, I would not "suppose". The valve can definitely be tightened to a water-tight seal (on a flat surface). Please note that the threads for the valve are a 1/2" straight thread. The thread is not a tapered pipe thread.

Are the various plastic parts uv stable or will they break down after a year or two if in the sun (like pvc)? wondering if i should get a brass one?

Brass float valves would make sense if you can find them. However the plastic ones are what I've been using for a number of years now and they are relatively inexpensive to replace. So for me, it makes better sense to just replace them as they accumulate calcium deposits and start to break down. They should last for a longer time if you take steps to clean them periodically and for sure after each year's use. Good luck with finding brass ones if that is the way you proceed. Bill Milow.

Four pack is the way to go to have spares.

These things are plastic and therefore are easy to break. In the past I would have to turn off the water supply and keep the pool filled by hand until I could get to the pool supply and buy another one. These came in a 4 pack so if one gets broken li have to do is take out another one and screw it into the supply pipe and we're up and running again. Perfect size and when I installed it the pool was full and it didn't leak. Now there's a steady trickle keeping the pool full.
