Clean and well-configured
Great systems for the upgrader! Mine arrived clean, with a recent BIOS and the 700w PSU and the lower front performance fan installed. W10p retail version, woot.Thank you ConfigureSystem for a clean refurb that adds value.[And thanks Amazon, for shipping it to Alaska]For those who don't know, you can update to the 4/23 BIOS at HP's support site and drop in most any Xeon E5 16xx, 26xx, or 46xx V3 or V4 CPU from here or eBay.You can also drop in 8x32gb sticks of 2133 with a V3 cpu, or 2400t ECC quad-channel ram if you upgrade to a V4 Xeon. 22c/44t Xeon with 256gigs of ram. 8DThere's also 2x PCIE3 x16, and a 3.0 x8 slot on the PCI bus, and 3x PCIE 2.0 and 6x SATA3 run by the Intel C612 chipset. Motherboard was built by Supermicro for HP.Downsides to this rig are few. The single-fan cpu cooler is good for 145w TDP, but not 24/7 [HP made a vapor cooler, but they're rare and precious on the aftermarket.]You'll want the not-cheap Memory Cooling Solution if you install >4 sticks of ram. You can jumper the 6-pin connector per youtube to avoid the POST code, but you'll never feel right about it. The cpu cooler dumps heat on the aft sticks. You can feel it and hwinfo will show it.The BIOS, while updated by HP in 4/2023, isn't as nice as the ones in the Z640 and Z840.The 92mm rear case fan will need help if you drop in a 3090, or any modern GPU that doesn't use a squirrel cage fan and exhaust out the rear. Case cooling is definitely the bottleneck. But it's not superhard to remedy. Nor are case swaps...

Great Computer, wrong memory type listed in the listing.
The memory type listed in the Item name is DDR4, which isn't true for my rig. It was actually DDR3, and I had to return two memory modules and buy two additional RAM sticks with the proper memory type for upgrade purposes. There's a bit of work ahead of you if you plan on replacing the graphics card. I had to edit the power allotment to the PCIe 16 slots via the BIOS to get my preferred GTX card (1660 Super) to properly communicate with the motherboard, and if you are a casual owner, that may turn you off from trying to upgrade the thing. Additionally, I know that an upgrade to WIndows 11 (ugh) will be necessary, so I'll have to find a workaround to the system's incompatibility with W11 which could, again, turn off casual users. That said, once I got things to work, this workstation is absolutely great! Runs my creative software very well, and has the bonus of being a decent gaming rig, able to play pretty current titles at 1080p at respectable frame rates (some in-software adjustments will be necessary).Good project machine for those comfortable with building PCs using repurposed hardware. Dropped a star off bc the listing is a little misleading as far as specs go.EDIT: Something to note for casual buyers getting this. This computer in particular is VERY finicky about the memory you need to upgrade. It's basically a requirement to get 2133 mHz memory sticks, and at least four for a quad channel setup. Look at the labels on your memory sticks. If it has "PC4-2133" anywhere on the labels, you're good to go, otherwise you might be out of luck. ALSO, your memory should also be ECC-registered.

What you really need to know about budget servers
I never write reviews but felt like I needed to with this one. I gave it 5 stars because you definitely get a good budget server. I grabbed a 240gig SSD and reused the 2 tb one that was given. Its a Toshiba 7200rpm drive so a fast HDD. I grabbed a more core cpu on eBay for about 30$ so all in im at 260$ for a proxmox server. I ended up using Ubuntu to run Pihole on, Minecraft server, network controllers, and some other work-related mid-servers. This thing works very well with them. I put also Truenas scale on it for the best of both worlds. It has a 1gbe onboard, so you won't get 10 gbe out of the box however just go and buy a 10gig nic from eBay for 40-50$ and toss it in there.Note the Display port on the GPU didn't work so I had to get a DVI cable to HDMI to work with a newer monitor. For a 10-year-old machine and an SSD this thing rocks and got a 14-core CPU from EBAY to make it work even better. Amazing find recommended by a friend.Great machine for testing

Worst computer EVER!!!!
This is the worst computer I've ever owned. So slow. Literally dial up was faster then this computer with high speed internet. Seller said it could be upgraded to windows 11. IT IN NO Way CAN BE UPGRADED!!!!!! System freezes at least every 2 minutes. Did not even have an HDMI hook up. Had to buy one myself. Would never buy an HP computer ever again. Especially not from this seller. Was a total scam!

Far better than the price
I purchased this decade-old system to centralize my home lab. It performs exceptionally well with Proxmox and offers affordable, upgradeable memory modules. I replaced the processor with an E5-2699v3 for less than $50 and added 256GB of RAM. Although it may not be as power-efficient as modern systems, it’s quiet and easy to rack-mount. Considering its affordability, it’s an excellent investment.

It only took the second
The first machine came in original packaging, keyboard, wired mouse and a big fix me message when I attempted the first power up. Returned it and the second .aching showed up by itself and works like a boss. I even found the DVD recorder.
