Will any external hard drive work for extra storage or do I have to buy this one?

The Xbox One and Series X/SeriesS can connect with any USB 3.0 External HD (They will play OG XBox, 360, and XBoxOne games with N/P) The size of the External HD all depends on your game library... The XboxOne and SeriesX/Series S seem to have a stop gap adding storage. (12-14TB can be added to these Consoles) If you want to play SeriesX/SeriesS games you'll need a SSD Card (Only 1 and 2 TB) both a bit expensive But, in a sense worth it. Your Library/Game collection will tie into how much HD Space you need

do you have to select whether the Xbox uses the internal or external drive when you are loading up a game? or will it find it automatically?

Bought the S yesterday. Found out X/S only installs on the internal drive or the expansion card. Backward compatible will be run from an external hard drive. 3.5 Tb of games uninstalled due to picking which ones I wanted to upgrade. I'll keep the versions for the One and below on the external but I wish the expansion card was cheaper or half off when you buy a new console.

I read that Xbox 360 couldn't use more than a 32gb external hard drive, so how will this work?

There was an Xbox live system software update for the 360 consoles that went live on August 30th ending the 16/32GB external memory cap. The USB ports on the console will now recognize external hard drives up to 2TB per slot, and two 2TB hard drives can be used simultaneously giving you 4TB total if you need it. It took ten years, but Microsoft finally listened to the masses.
