My Acer Monitor does not have a plate on the back to screw the stand into. Is there a compatable piece that you can order for this?

Unfortunately the only way to attach a standard to a ACER monitor is to buy a special bracket. The bracket attaches to the bottom of the stand and then close up behind it to provide a service to attach using your VESA mount. The problem is the brackets still extend below the monitor by about 4'since you only remove the flat portion of the stand to attach the bracket. That's 1 of the biggest problems with ACER monitors. I'm not sure why they are so resistant to making them adaptable to a VESA mount.

Can this hold one of the LG ultrawide 34" monitor in portrait mode?

No. I have it holding a 27" in portrait mode and there is no way that it could hold anything bigger in a vertical orientation.
