How do you spread the small rings without the 2 external holes? I have three snap ring pliers and all are useless for the small size rings?

First, I'd try cleaning my snap-ring pliers. Mine were dirty and at first didn't seem to fit--but after I cleaned the tips they fit perfectly in all sizes of rings.
