Why is s drain required? Is it just for overflow tray?

The drain is required because of the Reverse Osmosis (RO) filtration incorporated inside of the dispenser. RO is a slow "squeezing" process of the water where all the minerals and contaminants are removed. Approximately for every 3 gallons of "good" clean water it makes, it will empty a gallon of "bad" mineral rich water down the drain. All RO systems require a feed source water line in as well as a drain line out. I hope this helps MMWP

Can this be hooked up to washer machine plumbing? Currently have 5 gallon model and want ro replace with this model.

Yes. T into the fresh water and T into the washers drain.

What temperature does this cool the cold tap to?

It’s cold like out of the fridge but I had to return the first one I ordered because the cold water wouldn’t cool. Luckily I got a new one abs it worked perfect :)
