Fruitcakes
There is a sticker on the shrink wrap covering of the CD case that points out that this CD is simply the 3 EPs previously released by Lemonjelly, repackaged on a single CD, and if you already have the EPs you have no reason to buy the CD.Now thats refreshingly honest, and Lemonjelly were already well on their way to winning me over.Next is the CD case itself - a gatefold affair, made of heavy card and psychadelically decorated. Inside one fold we have the CD in a slip case and in the other we have a small booklet of images.I always appreciate a bit of effort with packaging, and Lemonjelly have excelled themselves. And so, onto the music...Lazy, sometimes funky, downtempo electronica, with a focus on melody, and laced with a quirky sense of humour. The comedy comes from the samples which are diverse and bizarre, but which, importantly, are not used as a substitute for good music. The samples make you smile, but its the tunes that make you play it again. And again.I have no idea where Lemonjelly came from, or why I had never heard of them until I stumbled across them at Amazon. But no matter, it was a great discovery.Get some KY in your life :o)

love this album used to play it a lot about 20 years ago and my kids loved the tunes too as we used to sing along to it whilst driving. I lost my album and heard one of the songs playing whilst in france on holiday and thought yes I need to get that album and I am so glad that amazon could get hold of it. lovely chill out tunes

This is the album you've been looking for!
In the ambient/chillout market it is often very hard to identify between very seperate strands of the genre- the difference between "Nightmares On Wax" and "Moby" for instance. Hard to describe, but definately there.Well, Lemonjelly.ky is an album that instantly made me say to myself"This is it. This is my genre."If you're after something with more rhythm than Brian Eno but also something more laid-back than the Chemical Brothers then this is it. Very similar in style to the more relaxed tracks of Orbital or Underworld, Lemonjelly.ky has the perfect balance of gentle beats, bizarre effects and trippy samples. A superb buy.

Fabulous music, only OK sound quality
This is a patchy recording in that the sound stage and atmosphere are rather flat. Despite the marvellous music it just fails to come alive. This is perhaps for the want of some dynamism in the original mix, yet some tracks are very good.Given the interesting, unusual music and sounds this could and should have been a staggering album. Unfortunately it tends to fall flat on its face. However would buy again for the infectious quality of the music.I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile. • Clarity – Clear no trace of muddiness • Channel separation - OK • Channel balance – Very traditional all centre little left or right • Sound Stage – Limited mostly due to the very traditional mix which leaves the recording feeling as if it is a mono recording • Distortion – Non audible • Compression – Uncertain may be heavily compressed which has stiffled the life out of the recording • Atmosphere – Limited does seem to vary from track to track but the unimaginative sound stage and mix seem to leave the recording feeling lifeless • Bass – low frequencies – Reasonable, not overly deep feels a little flat and lifeless • Treble – high frequencies – OK, uninspiring • Vocals – Crisp and clearAs a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as it’s just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse.Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CD’s are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame. Modern “remasters” can both enhance and degrade a recording. The statement GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is the limiting factor. Ignore this at your cost.

Still holds up after more than 16 years!
One of the most amazing albums I have heard recently. Instant classic. Jazzy, upbeat, and profound, this album is what you're looking for, if what you're looking for is an album to listen to while driving at night. It's relaxing and lovely, but there is one downside. It's not one of those albums where every song is equally amazing. All the songs are incredible, don't get me wrong, but there are obviously far better songs on the album than others. And the worst part is, they're all in one big cluster. The best songs on the album are tracks 3, 4, and 5, A Tune For Jack, His Majesty King Raam, and The Staunton Lick. A Tune For Jack is the most sublime lounge piano chords on top of a catchy beat that just makes you want to move your head. His Majesty King Raam is a fantastic lullaby with the most soothing piano and xylophone melody with an occasional backwards symphony bridge. And The Staunton Lick is a simple guitar chord progression turned into the most happy and overjoyed melody anywhere, that won't fail at putting a smile on your face. The rest of the songs are pretty good, but fail to capture your attention as well as these three songs do and serve much better as background music. However, if you're looking for a great CD and a great album, then lemonjelly.ky should not be an album to be passed up.
