No, they are not closed terrarium plants.

Is this suitable for plants rather than succulents? I.e. could it be used for a closed terrarium?

I don't see why not. I have used an old fish bowl for mine which raises a different problem of soil volume for a curved space. A closed terrarium is essentially an enclosed living environment which retains its own water and nutrients, with just occasional additions needed. This kit contains everything you would need to make that happen.

How soon after delivery do the cacti need to be planted? So will this last until Christmas if purchased now!? Thanks

Yes they will last but take them out of the box and leave them in a sunny spot and then put them back into the box when need be.
