Does it work well for indian garam masala?

Yes! it works perfectly, easy to clean up as well. It can make a wonderful Indian Garamond masala. it blended the individual components well. Even grinds nutmeg into a good powder.

It says the bowls are made of stainless steel. But looking at the image, I'm wondering - is the bottom of the bowl plastic?

The outer base and the two grinding bowls are stainless steel. The top portion of the base into which the grinding bowls lock is black plastic. The inner cover that fits both grinding bowls is clear plastic; the outer top cover that goes over the grinding bowl is clear, grey plastic. When ypou press down on this cover it activtes the grinder: a safety feature. Have had Secura about 3 months grinding flax seeds and nuts. Only requires short bursts of grinding and does a very good job. You can view the results without removing the top cover I think it;s the best of the bunch.

Will this grinder work with dried spice leaves? Would the 4-blade work best like a food processor?

Yes, you may have to pack the leaves down or crunch them a little, or they may fly around over the blades.
