I found myself battling a skin infection once and decided to take Reishi mushrooms to build up my immunity. After a month the skin infection stayed as is but I got 2 viral infections in a row - the flu and an enterovirus. I NEVER catch these in an ordinary year. I was so disappointed. Then I read that ground up Reishi mushrooms do nothing - it has to be an extract - either alcohol based or water based (both have different beneficial compounds). Nice con, Solaray, just grinding up mushrooms and selling them at this price!

First some insight as to how I started taking Reishi Mushroom as a supplement: About 5 years ago I was incessantly sick and always seemed to be coming down with something, and a co-worker of mine suggested Reishi mushroom as a supplement to boost immunity. At the time, I was a skeptic when it came to supplements, called him a witch doctor, but then decided to give it a chance regardless since I did NOT want to get sick again, and I already had the looming sore throat and swollen lymph glands. Anyway, I'm glad I gave his suggestion a try, because the next day I woke up feeling refreshed, and not a sign of illness.Since then I take Reishi religiously, and I have had two colds in the last 5 years. I've gone from the most susceptible I know to illnesses to the least likely to pick up a bug, so if you want to know about Reishi in general, I highly suggest starting a regiment of it. Just be prepared for some....umm..."gastro disturbances" the first few days since it's extremely high in insoluble fiber.Anyway, on to this specific product: Seeing as I take Reishi regularly, I'm always worried about cost and quality of a product. There was a brand that I preferred to Solaray for a while that contained a higher concentration of polyscaccharides and was of similar cost, but their brand has inflated to nearly three times the price of this one, and I could easily double up my dosage of Solaray to account for the difference. At that time, Solaray became my "go-to" brand for Reishi, and that's been for about two years or so now. They remain a consistent price leader, but still deliver a quality product.So if you're looking for the right combination of quality and price, I don't see Solaray being beat.

I was taking Super Beta Prostate, a good product, to fight having to get up at night to urinate because of enlarged prostate. Super Beta Prostate evidently fights prostate enlargement by means of its ingredient (found in sal palmetto, etc.) "beta sito-sterol," which BTW can be bought in high strength without the shotgun dose of herbs (or extracts) in Super Beta Prostate & Prostata. Beta sito-sterol acts to block one form of testosterone called DHT. By blocking DHT one can discourage prostate enlargement & loss of hair on scalp. (I have lots of hair.) But after I had bought a crate of Super Beta Prostate, they came out with an improved version. So I checked it out & found that the new ingredient was Reishi Mushroom. I take a lot of various prostate pills daily. At first one Super Beta prostate or 1 Prostata was all I needed each day. Then I had to increase until now I take a lot each day of various things. I was getting up once a night despite my pills. But when I added Reishi mushroom to my regimen, I was back to not getting up at all. But as I age I find myself now getting up in the night again. I may be fighting a losing battle, but I believe my pills have greatly retarded the enlargement of my prostate. I take also a mixed sterol pill to get a really big dose of Beta Sito-sterol, since I don't know how to get pure beta sito-sterol. And I use 2 varieties of Reishi mushroom, of which this listed product is one. A gripe I have is that the bottle seems stingy small. I think I should be drinking Reishi mushroom tea also. I don't know how Reishi works.

I take this daily for immunity. I honestly think it protects me from getting sick.
