Epicurean Garlic Press, Stainless Steel, 6.5 x 1 x 1.5 inches, Silver

We bought this garlic press back in 2020 when it was quite a bit less expensive. It is more expensive now, but we still can wholeheartedly recommend it if you want a top-notch garlic press. The press action is excellent, and the swing-out basket makes getting the last bit of garlic out super easy. The swing-out cage also makes it easy to clean. It is made of high-quality stainless steal, and there is no tarnishing or wear after 5 years of extensive use. It will obviously last many, many more years, so that makes it worth the extra money.

Why would anybody pay $40+ dollars for a garlic press you might ask? Because it is that good. I have had this garlic press for 7 years. Before that, I owned several other brands costing far less. The best I had owned to that point was the Zyliss. There are 3 things the Kuhn Rikon does much better than the Zyliss. First, it cleans up very quickly. The main reason for this is the piece with the holes rotates so you can access both sides. Takes maybe 30 seconds to completely clean. Second, it gives you a lot of leverage. You can even mince garlic when its frozen. It is easy to do 2-3 pieces at a time. Third, it is durable. 7 years later, it still looks and works like the day I got it. No rust, no chipping and no visible wear. What is the bad news? If you have small hands, it may be difficult grab both handles properly. My wife, whose hands measure about 5 inches in length finds it a bit big. This causes her to pinch herself. The problem is that the top handle comes down over the bottom handle on the sides. If you struggle to get your hand firmly on both sides with some room to spare before pressing down, you can catch your skin as you press down. I have probably used this for 1000 cloves and never had the issue. I am guessing that somewhere between 5.5 to 6 inches is probably the minimum length your hand should be to use this safely. There is a point where this tool makes sense and point where it does it. If you like the press several pounds of garlic at a time (say a bag from Costco), a food processor will do the trick in a fraction of the time. If you only use 1-2 cloves of garlic at a time, this is probably just too expensive. However, if you find yourself needing to regularly press 5-50 cloves at a stretch, this is what you want.

Kitchen implements are a pretty individualized thing. Every cook is different, after all, and what works for some just doesn't work for others. This isn't the most ergonomic design, and it's really built for medium-sized hands for people with a reasonable grip strength. If you have a weak grip, you're going to want something with more leverage; if you have large, meaty hands, you'll have to take care that you don't pinch part of your hand in the handle. That said, this works incredibly well for me. The leverage is right, the fulcrum is directly over the clove, I don't get caught in anything, and I can very efficiently get through a lot of cloves of garlic with this. It will take one large clove or two medium cloves easily—you don't even have to peel them, and I often don't, because it makes cleanup slightly easier—and the result is a very nicely minced/pressed garlic. It is, of course, a garlic press. There will be leakage on occasion, and occasionally bits will jet out. This is common to all garlic presses, and it's more about the nature of garlic than it is about the press itself. That said, that leakage is fairly easy to deal with (the handle opens all the way, not only lifting the grating plate but exposing everywhere any escaping garlic might be so that you can collect it all). Cleanup is relatively fun compared to other garlic presses I've owned. When you open the handle, the grating plate lifts up and is ridiculously easy to clean out, especially if you've been doing unpeeled garlic (just pull off the peel under running water, which clears most of the leftover garlic as well). A vigorous rinse under tap water will generally do the trick. With other garlic presses, it's sometimes difficult to get the bits of garlic out of the grating plate, but this one is thin enough that there's no trouble at all. If you've been unfortunate enough not to clean it out immediately after pressing garlic, letting it soak for 30 minutes will generally free up any dried-on cruft. The construction is sturdy, and it feels solid. If you have an exceptionally strong grip, you could carelessly break this, I suppose, but it seems in no danger from me. I've owned two of these, and had no troubles with either one of them.

This is an excellent garlic press. It makes quick work of mincing garlic and with little squeezing effort. I usually chop my garlic by hand and would only use my old garlic press if I had a large volume or was pressed for time. I find myself using this one more often because it does a better job. It requires less effort and there is less waste. With my old press I had to scrape it out between cloves or it would get jammed up. This one seems more powerful and efficient, I can process a lot of garlic and not have to scrape it out until I’m done. It says you can use unpeeled cloves but that seems weird to me so I can’t comment on how well it tackles that task. I would rate it 5 stars but it’s a little pricey and the way the basket part swings out - does make it easy to clean, but it’s a little awkward for me. Overall it’s a great press and I would buy it again.

I felt a little duped when paying so much for a garlic press - I've struggled with different ones over the years - difficult to clean - almost impossible. Others weren't dishwasher safe - it was obnoxious to use a garlic press. Skeptical - yes. I'm a convert, though. This is heavy duty stainless steel, and is clearly high quality. It does a fantastic job without too much pressure and produces a very usable product. It's heavy enough to feel quality, but not uncomfortable to use. It is small enough to be comfortable in the hand, but closes tight, fits together, so takes up very little storage space. It's super fast when pressing garlic - grade A all the way around! IF you care about the things described, this is your tool.

Great garlic press! Highly recommend! Easy to squeeze and clean. Garlic can squirt out a little, but I love the ease of using it. I bought one for condo and then another one for cabin. Threw out the others!

This gadget is amazing. It works so well I can’t believe it. Definitely worth the price.

I go through a lot of garlic presses. I cook every meal from fresh ingredients and that includes at least an entire bulb of garlic in every pan of meat. Garlic presses come to my house to be crushed into pieces and thrown in the trash. I've only used this three times but I am happy to say that despite its shortcomings, it's the best crusher I've ever used, and I didn't know it was possible to have a device that works this well in the kitchen. It is easy to use and durable. I recommend that you buy this without hesitation! There are two grievances, I list them more so you can understand them and decide if it works for you. The first is that it is very possible to pinch your hand badly. This device is intended to provide a ton of leverage but it's also low-profile meaning it does not take up a lot of space. You can see the safety/functionality trade-off here. I haven't pinched myself yet, but caution is necessary when I use it because I know at some point a big pinch is coming! The second complaint isn't so much a complaint, as discovering that I have to clean this in a new way than I'm used to. Every press I've had previously had one of those little stabbers which could reverse back, and push out the pulp which would make the rest of the cleaning quite simple. I can't do that with this one. There is no set of stabbers & you can see that the screen flips out, and it is intended for more than just garlic. It looks intended to be thoroughly cleaned for heavy use in many different ingredient situations. For example, I already crushed clementines and I found that it made it very easy to clean because it folded out. Cleaning will be a little more time consuming but you can subtract that extra time from the fact that I can crush my product literally ten times faster now. The final compliment I'd like to state is that there is no waste or leaking. I did not find that any of the product squished out the edges as I pressed down. Almost 100% of the product got crushed through the holes where it was supposed to go, and that is not something I've previously experienced. What a pleasure to NOT have to deal with scraping leaky bits. A real time saver. While I have only used this for a week I am confident to say that I am as pleased as can be the money spent, and I expect to own this for life. It's durable beyond anything I could expect. Buy it. Edit: I came back to add this piece of information to the review: I have crushed over 50 entire bulbs of garlic with this thing and it's as good as the day I bought it. I am very confident after several months of ownership that this is truly a workhorse and you need to have this in your kitchen. I'd also like to point out that after several months I have never once pinched myself.

Esta es la mejor prensa de ajo que he tenido. Me dieron uno hace unos años en los Estados Unidos y me enamoré de ella. Luego compré una prensa de ajo recomendada por Amazon (Amazon Choice) por la mitad del precio, lo que hace un buen trabajo pero no es nada comparado con este. Mi padre siempre me dijo de niño "Recibes lo que pagas", y esto es 100% cierto para esta prensa de ajo. Acabo de comprar otra y, a pesar del alto precio, sé que he hecho lo correcto. Es duradero, muy fácil de limpiar, funciona perfectamente sin esfuerzo en el ajo y también en el jengibre que las prensas de ajo más baratas no pueden manejar.

Use it three or four times a week. Easy to use, easy to clean, crushes the garlic with almost no effort at all. Every garlic lover’s dream!

I've tried a few garlic presses over the years and this is by far the best one. It requires less force than a regular garlic press due to the design using a compound lever, multiplying the force you apply. It makes it very easy to press unpeeled garlic cloves so saves a lot of time and hassle when cooking. The chamber that holds the garlic is also able to come completely out with completely exposed sides, which makes it extremely easy to clean as well. I just remove the garlic skin, then rinse the press under a tap of running water and give it a slight scrub with a brush and then just dry it with a cloth and that's it. It takes like 30 seconds to clean. It also feels very well made and robust, being completely metal and made of stainless steel. The only negative is the price, it is very expensive for a garlic press, but as long as it lasts and is as durable as it seems, then I think it's definitely worth it if you cook a lot and use a lot of garlic. The time it saves and the ease of use just makes it a worthwhile purchase.
