Question 3

FDA Approved?

Accepted Answer

This may not seem so, but this is actually quite a complex question with much nuance. The simple answer is that the FDA does NOT have the authority to approve supplements. There are companies that do regulation on supplements, but it’s mostly a voluntary basis. The FDA does play a roll in supplements, but I think it’s also worth pointing out that if you haven’t already done so, you should look into what FDA approval actually means. It does not necessarily mean safe. It’s primarily focused on making sure that the product ingredients are correctly labeled, inspecting manufacturing facilities, keeping in compliance with applicable laws, and making sure that no labels claim to treat, diagnose, cure, or prevent diseases.

As I stated before, the answer contains nuance. Although the FDA does NOT have the authority to approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness, or to approve their labeling, BEFORE the supplements are sold to the public, once they do hit the market, there are roles for the agency in regulating them. Since companies can often introduce a supplement to the market without notifying the FDA, the agency's role in regulating supplements primarily begins after the product enters the marketplace. This particular product has been on the market for approximately 20 years.

So, even though the FDA does not approve supplements The FDA does periodically inspect supplement manufacturing facilities to verify companies are meeting applicable manufacturing and labeling requirements. The FDA also monitors adverse event reports submitted by dietary supplement companies, health care professionals, and consumers as well as other product complaints for valuable information about the safety of products once they are on the market. If a product is found to be unsafe or doesn’t otherwise comply with the law, the FDA can: Work with the company to bring the product into compliance. Ask the company to voluntarily recall the product. Take action to remove a dangerous product from the market.

I could write much more, but I do hope that helps to answer your question, or at least point you in the right direction to find out more.
