A Wonderful Follow‑Up to The Gruffalo — Charming and Engaging
The Gruffalo’s Child is an absolutely lovely story and a perfect companion to the original book. The illustrations are beautiful, full of character and atmosphere, and the storyline is engaging without being too long — ideal for bedtime reading. It keeps little ones captivated, and the gentle rhythm of the writing makes it a joy to read aloud. It’s one of those books that children ask for again and again, and it’s easy to see why. A delightful addition to any child’s bookshelf. Highly recommended.

Daughter of The Gruffalo
~ ‘𝑨𝒉𝒂! 𝑶𝒉𝒐! 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒏𝒐𝒘! ...’ From the back cover of the paperback edition (image below refers): ~ ‘𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐨 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐨 𝐠𝐫𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩, 𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝. 𝗘𝗡𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗗 at times for emphasis, the text, which includes speech and repeat elements (lightly adjusted each time), is a good size in black throughout. Suitably atmospheric, the accompanying Axel Scheffler artwork offers scope for further discussion, as always...those meaningful facial expressions covering a range of emotions as the 𝐆𝐫𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐨'𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 tentatively ponders hints of some other possible residents of the deep dark wood, which The Gruffalo fans might just recognise! Towards the end, there is a neat reversal in the theme as we arrive back where we started, albeit a ‘𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱’!💤 Look out for the latest addition to the family, too!

A worthy but less captivating sequel to the gruffalo
My child loved this book. We were both huge fans of the gruffalo, and this does not dissapoint as sequels go. Scheffler's illustrations are beautiful as always, and depict the deep dark wood but during a winter night. However, due to its setting, each picture can appear a little repetitive (more bare trees and snow) and as a result, they are less captivating and don't hold my daughters attention as much as the original. However, the story is shorter, with less text per page, so you never dwell on one picture for long. We encounter the same characters from the first book, but from the perspective of the gruffalos child, which provides similar but slightly different theming to the first. The book allows children to remember and recognise familiar characters (e.g. gruffalo, fox, snake, owl, mouse) which my daughter really enjoys. On the whole, I would thoroughly recommend this if you are looking for another gruffalo fix!

The Curious Gruffalo's Child
In "The Gruffalo’s Child," Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler invite us back into the enchanting world of the deep dark wood, where familiar characters and new adventures await. While it may seem like a continuation of the original tale, this sequel offers fresh rhymes, fantasy, and cleverness. Just as we fell in love with the charming cast of characters in "The Gruffalo," we find ourselves delighted to revisit them in this sequel. However, this time, the spotlight shines on the curious and brave Gruffalo’s child, a miniature version of her fearsome father. The playful nod to the original story, with references to the Big Bad Mouse and encounters with familiar characters like the snake, owl, fox, and mouse, adds an extra layer of enjoyment for both children and adults. It sparks curiosity and prompts questions about the continuity between the two books, keeping readers engaged and eager to unravel the mysteries of the deep dark wood. As the Gruffalo’s child encounters the clever mouse once again, we are treated to a showcase of imagination and wit, as the mouse outsmarts the young Gruffalo with ease. It's a testament to the enduring charm of these beloved characters and the timeless appeal of Donaldson's storytelling. As a parent, I appreciate how the book serves as an excellent example to teach my daughter the importance of listening to her parents—a lesson that can sometimes be challenging for children to grasp. Children, being naturally curious and independent, often find themselves tempted to defy instructions and explore the world on their own terms. Through the adventures of the Gruffalo's child, we can gently remind our own children of the wisdom and experience that parents possess, guiding them toward making safe and responsible choices. Despite the Gruffalo's child's disobedience, the story ultimately underscores the unconditional love and protection that parents have for their children.
