2013 debut album from the Oakland-based Metal band. Lycus has crafted an incredibly mature album for such a young band, instantly recognizable as among the top Funeral Doom/Death Doom releases of the past several years. One can hear echoes of Mournful Congregation, Asunder, My Dying Bride, even Pallbearer within their melancholic dirges and woefully heavy riffs; however, Lycus don't rely solely on punishingly slow tempos. In fact, even the slow sections have a sense of movement not often seen in the genre, and at other times the band breaks out into bursts of hysteric Black Metal, such as on the album's 20-minute title track. Violins scattered throughout bring further variation to the funereal proceedings of Tempest - a record not content to simply sit on conservative genre ideals. Tempest is the most promising debut of 2013 in the Doom genre, and establishes Lycus as a band to watch in the months and years ahead.

Contender of album of the year!
I've got impressed by this release almost as much as I've got by Pallbearer's Sorrow and Extinction. The atmosphere of the album is emotionally dense, melancholic and sorrowful. There some tremolo picking strategically spread over the album that reminds you're going through a Tempest indeed. But the melodic parts will bring you to tears and touch your soul. The album cover is also an amazing piece of art exactly tuned to the vibes of the album.

lycus...wieder so eine band aus dem nichts..wieder mal muss ich mich bei robert müller vom metal hammer bedanken..über bandcamp war ich schon auf das demo gestossen, und nun endlich das debüt..und was für eins..grandios..wer die letzte von bell witch mochte, wird hier nichts falsch machen..nein, wer gute musik mag wird hier nichts falsch machen..was für ein grosses album!doom zum niederknien, immer mal wieder verfeinert durch anleihen aus dem blackmetal, postbereich (isis!!)..mit einem gespür für die grossen, tiefen emotionen..ganz heisser anwärter auf die lp des jahres bei mir..
