Where is this radio made?

Chinese made radio sold by a US distributor. Word on various forums ( Facebook) is that the quality can be hit or miss. I own a MD-390 GPS and a MD-UV390 GPS. Haven’t hade any problems. The TYTUSA.COM website is somewhat helpful, but updating the firmware can be tricky. Best bet is join one of the forums on FaceBook to be able to get questions answered. The HAM community is pretty solid on that angle. Hope this helps.

what distance can these radios comunicate ?

2-3 miles, but power setting, antenna, Freq. local repeater and building etc, these things effect TX/RX range.

Do i have to pick vhf or uhf when i order this i do not see a place to do so

It is dual band, vhf & uhf both included.

What is the difference in the uv380 and the uv390. i see the one is waterproof/dustproof, is that the difference?

You are correct. The 380 models of the TYT radio are standard radios. The 390 versions are the waterproof ones. IP67 level. That's as long as you have the mic / programming port cover on. You can get a waterproof hand mic, but the plug doesn't have any gaskets on it. I've really never looked at making / purchasing a waterproof gasket to use with the waterproof hand mic though I'm sure they can be made / purchased somewhere. Be careful also because there are also GPS and non-GPS versions of both the 380 and 390 radios. Other than that I've been very happy with mine. I own 3 of the TYT radios. I've got 2 of the UV-390's and 1 MD-390, all in the GPS version.
