I've sampled Brimar 5749's and GE 5654's and the ones that came with -- the differences are subtle (the tubes on this are only for the pre-amp stage) -- no complaints for the $50 price tag -- it's as good as any headphone amp I've tried under $150 and mine has been working perfect for over a year
