Malevolence 2: Bereavement
M**J
A Prequel that outdoes it's predecessor to become one of the best horrors of the 2000s!
This is a pull no punches horror about a young boy, Martin Bristol (Spencer List) kidnaped by serial killer, Graham Sutter (Brett Rickaby) and forced to witness the atrocities he commits on innocent women. Worse yet, Sutter needs an heir apparent to his gruesome deeds and has chosen Martin to learn his trade. The film also follows a parallel story involving a teenage girl, Allison (Alexandra Daddario), who recently lost her parents and whose path is obviously destined to collide with the ordeal of young Martin…and to say anymore would spoil an intense chiller with a truly shocking and blood soaked final act.Writer/director Stevan Mena showed a lot of potential with his first film Malevolence and with his follow-up, Bereavement, he shows he is living up to it big time. While a prequel to his first film, Bereavement is crafted so you don’t need to have seen Malevolence, but if you have, there are a lot of little touches and nods you’ll recognize…especially in the post credits sequence. Mena’s involving such a young child in all the violence is daring and horrifying at the same time and we share in the horror as young Martin Bristol is made to participate in his disturbed mentor’s acts. It’s even more horrifying since he is basically a good kid forced into this and not some “bad seed” which we’ve seen before. Stevan Mena keeps a feeling of dread throughout, delivers some taunt suspense and doesn’t bludgeon us with shocking moments, so when they do come, they have the intended effect. The camera work evokes John Carpenter at times, as Mena knows how to frame a shot and achieve far more with it than just making it look good. As filmed by Marco Cappeta, the film looks beautiful at times, despite the grim subject matter. Also much like Carpenter, Mena also composed the atmospheric score and edited this highly effective chiller. The gore effects are live and well executed and the lack of CGI is quite refreshing. The cast, including genre vet Michael Biehn, performs well with Daddario making a feisty and resourceful heroine and young Spencer List effectively handling the role of Martin. Rickaby is effectively creepy as Graham Sutter, yet gives him a subtle sadness that makes him slightly more tragic than the usual serial killer portrayal. John Richard Ingram returns as Officer Riley from Malevolence and veteran actor John Savage has a small role as Ted, the father of Allison’s romantic interest William (Nolan Gerard Funk).A delightfully down to basics and highly recommended horror film. One of my favorites of 2011… Bereavement was made in 2010 and played at film festivals till it got a proper release in early 2011. Remember to watch through the credits, especially if you saw Malevolence. The disc is a beautiful transfer and contains some extra footage not in the initial release!

One of the best movies you've never heard of
After watching the first movie, this sequel doesn't hold back. Its a nice, somewhat slow burn that pays off in the end. This is a classic slasher flick that has plenty of slashing. Yes, its full of horror movie cliches, but that's why we watch them. Its full of screams and gore. What else do you need? Good movie, looking forward to watching part 3.

Now I'm into this Series!
Wow, don't get Me wrong the first one in The Malevolence series simply titled "Malevolence" was neat. It had some classic Slasher Vibes, a solid Killer, and some rockin 80's style synth. But this, this one right here was a Horror Master piece. With a nice blend of the early 2000's brutalness slash realism and the classic story telling methods like Carpenter and Craven this Film right here has much to offer. Unlike it's predecessor the budget seems to be on a much bigger scale. The Camera quality went up in spades as well as the talent. These actors can act, where talking Michael Biehn as a major role aka Hicks from "Alien." And even though She had to be in that awful "Texas Chainsaw 3D" trash Alexandra Daddario did a wonderful job here as The Leading role aka The Final Girl. She went through a believable and natural character Arch, that made Me really route for Her during the course of the film. From the music still being heavily 80's Horror inspired to the gore effects that loosely reminded Me of Adam Greens "Hatchet Series" this is one of those ones Your gonna love if Your thing is Slasher Horror. I march on to part 3 with nothing but hope.

Child exploitation as a gimic
I saw this film last night and can't get it out of my head. But for all the wrong reasons. The gist of the series Is that a young boy is being groomed by a serial killer to become a serial killer. The family business as it's called. The usual torture scenes follow in an old slaughter house, of course. The performances by the cast are very good from the adult killer to the victims. I won't give away the ending but this is the first time in a long time that I've been this upset over a movies ending. Hint- this is not a fairy tale ending.

Fake (paid?) Reviews Are Real
This is a 3.0 movie on the strength of the actors and minimally acceptable everything else. I'm giving 1 star to correct this bs about 5 star reviews. Kind of a savage movie that doesn't really make you feel like anything worthwhile happened. But the quality was 3.0 or better. Just the overall concept didn't have any of the redeeming qualities of good slasher films. Plus, this guy drives around abducting young women in a one-horse town in his family business van with his last name in huge letters on the side? I guess nobody ever investigates missing persons wherever this is. Plus one staple of this type of movie is the "authorities"--how they compete with the killer and race against time to catch him. Well this town is so small there aren't any law enforcement agencies of any kind, apparently. It appeared that something interesting might be going on with Michael Biehn's character but this turned out to just be a tease.Based on the "Psycho" model with a little Halloween thrown in. But the filmmaker is too lazy or untalented to flesh out even his borrowed tropes in any satisfying way. Unless I'm mistaken the director and writer also composed the music--that's kind of impressive, though the music wasn't especially notable. The guy that did Halloween also wrote the theme for that so ... emulating him maybe I don't know.Just checked and this ersatz thriller made $10 million on a $2 million budget. Ugh, this effort was rewarded--AND they made another. What if Ms D'Addario wasn't in it wearing skimpy tops? Maybe I should have just reviewed her rack.

The prices are awesome. And since I saw 1 and 3 I needed 2. It was also cheap in price. Clear picture too.
