The currently selected tune will play through once. Yes, there are four different volume settings. The sensor does not sound. It is the wall receiver that plays the tune and the volume settings are on the receiver.

Is it loud? If so can you give me an example on how loud I need something loud

It's not loud at all. In fact, this is my second purchase as the first one stopped working after few months (and yes, I replaced the battery), and the first one was louder than the one I just got today. The volume on this one as a silent mode (light flashing only) and then 3 audio mode. The first one is barely audible, second one is not much louder, the third one is ok, assuming it is setup in a quiet environment.
