Is it china or not? I'm confused and it would be a gift.

Yes - Noritake Holly & Berry dishes are true china by the definition of china as they are made from the substance which defines a china product - and yes they have been given as gifts for many generations

Is there a soup bowl included in the 5-piece set?

No. The 5 piece set includes Dinner/Salad/Bread & Butter plates and Cup and Saucer -- I think soup bowls may be available separately.
