It moves slowly and gets a bit tedious. I didn't finish it
Whenever I read black literature, I am impressed with the emotional depth and gripping narrative. This is an exception. It moves slowly and gets a bit tedious. I didn't finish it, so maybe there was better to come in the parts I didn't read.

NOT MY FAVOURITE LAWRENCE HILL NOVEL
Always drawn to novels based on my own heritage and background. Spent many of my formative years in the GTA in the 50s 60s and 70s. No complaints but not as exceptional a novel as Book of Negroes.

I am not black, brown, coloured or what have you, I am a human being.
A wonderful novel. One of the best sentences I will remember of this novel goes something like this: "I am not black, white or brown, coloured or man of colour, I am a human being, period." I also love the multiracial bondings that take place in the novel between men and women. A very good read.

Fantastic Book
This is one of the best books I've read recently. It spans the life of a woman kidnapped from Africa as a child and follows her journey from the ship that brought her into slavery through her old age,as she becomes a much sought after and respected woman of letters. The author has sprinkled the book with historical facts throughout and woven a tapestry of such compelling characters that I got lost in the book and couldn't put down. I recommend this book highly.

More autobiography than fiction
Fascinating account of the black experience across several layers of Black-North American society, but primarily a well written account of family experience and loyalty. The genes search and ultimate revelations are a link with all our searches and investigations into our past...a verification that regardless of color, families are very much alike.

Oustanding Book
I found this book to be outstanding. This book is about 500 pages which I finished in about a week. If you are a fan of historical fiction this is the book for you. Its one of those books you just can not put down. I also recommend "Someone knows my name" (also published under the title "Book Of Negroes" by this same author.

Not his best
I read a lot of "black literature". This is not Hill's best book. I had a hard time getting through it - I found it to be a little confusing (especially if you are starting and stopping the book). The kindle version was terrible in terms of formatting. It would probably take the average person 8 - 10 hours to read this book - I dont think this is the one you want to spend that amount of time with. That said - I enjoyed the history - some of the characters were well developed - but if you compare this one to "Book of Negroes" - you will be very disappointed.
