Does this shaver work well in the ball area. I want a nice smooth finish. Is that possible?

Yes, works well if you are careful and pull skin so it is straight/tight before shaving it. Can't just go at the loose wrinkled stuff and expect not to get nicked. However, this is the safest tool I've found for the whole groin area. Baby powder does help and reduces stickiness especially if the area is damp. Powder won't hurt the shaver, talc is measured in microns.

It works fine. You would have to shave very aggressively to harm yourself. The previous models would cut you.

Are there any significant differences between this model and the philips norelco bodygroom series 3500? is it worth the extra $ 30?

It depends on where you want to use this groomer? On your back or on your private part? Are you also want to use it for trimming body hairs on armpits/arms/legs? If you only focus on the hairs on your back, consider series 3500. If you want to trim/shave the hairs on your private part, then I will highly recommend series 7000. Getting a quick and smooth trim/shave on your private part without getting nicks and cuts is much worth than $30.
