Great buy for $60!
While they're the typical quality you'd expect from Merrell, the extra quality isn't there.I've had many pairs of them through the years and my most notable is the quality and comfort of their products. Had I spent the usual $100-plus for these shoes, they'd have been returned. While everything lines up, side by side, they are visually a little different when you look at them. This may be the reason for their price though Vibrim is usually particular about what product carries their logo. They were extremely uncomfortable at first. Not what I've experienced with any textile product. Usually Merrells are super comfortable, right out of the box.Overall these shoes were bought for hiking and camping in the Carolina mountains so they're purpose built but I've never experienced a break in period with a textile shoe. That's normally more in the over-ankle height, leather boot category. After wearing a few times they have gotten more comfortable. They have a good, sturdy toe point and on wet grass and clay, they were well footed.I am curious about their longevity because their shoes typically outlive their looks for a few years. That said, I always rotate the old shoes in to my yard work shoes and throw them away well before they're dead. I still have a pair of hiking mocs at my in laws house for when we visit and I do outdoor work there, where they have major water drainage issues. They're no newer than 2008 and still nust as comfortable and water tight as they were when I got them. Besides looking like a homeless guy, I'd wear them anywhere that stability and keeping water out would be an issue. Most likely these will last just as long but, there's got to be a reason they were only $60.00 ($75-$110 elsewhere) and it may be that they're not very attractive and not the normal quality shoe that they turn out.Again, they're Merrells and they were only $60. I'm probably setting the bar in the $120 shoe range and had I paid that, they'd have been returned. Otherwise the reason for 4 stars was really the break in time and aesthetics. So far they feel like a great hiking shoe I the under 80 dollar range. I will loop around after some gorge time on wet rocks and steep hills to update. I'd really like to give them the 5 stars they so deserve but now it's a solid 4 star.

Awesome tough hiking shoes
Took these on a trip to Arizona recently and was really impressed by several things. First - the waterproof part seemed to work great. I sunk into wet snow and stepped in deep puddles - totally dry. They also worked great in the Arizona red clay mud- at one point it felt like I had concrete shoes on because of the amount of clay. I just washed it all off afterwards - shoes were dry. Second, they have great traction - never slipped on even wet smooth rocks. Third, the fit was pretty good. I’ve had other hiking shoes that rub my heel but because the toe box is a bit tighter on these that doesn’t happen. When I first got them I almost returned them because they’re so heavy - but I think that heaviness is due to the tough materials the shoe is made from. Also I think the only thing I’m going to change on them is to take the stock insoles out and put in an orthotic insert with more arch and heel cushion. But I do that with my running shoes as well so I don’t blame the shoes for that. Super happy with this purchase as it handled it all:snow, mud, water - these things are my go-to hiking shoes now!

Dry and Comfortable Active wear that works
I need shoes for an active outdoor lifestyle. They need to be ready for just about anything, snow, rain sunshine, or even just wet grass in the morning which can be a problem if your shoes are not waterproof. They need to be acceptable attire at business meetings and work in the field. They need to be light but supportive enough for walking 4 or 6 miles when I need to or when I just feel like it. When they get dirty and muddy, I need to hose them down to get ready for my next meeting. These do all of that. I bike to work rain or shine and I don't want to deal with wet feet. These shoes provide reasonable warmth and traction in the cold and snow at least down to single digits F. I like the fit which seems to be true to traditional sizing. I prefer more arch support but not everybody does and these do not provide much. I have arch supports that I will try but if you prefer a shoe with more arch support built in, these might not be for you. I have not had these long enough to wear them in hot summer weather but I do wear them inside and my feet never feel overheated. They seem to breathe well. If you need all weather shoes that are rugged, comfortable and affordable, shoes that work, these might be for you. So far they do everything I need them to do at a price I am willing to pay. That's a pretty tall order but they work. The only thing I would add is more arch support as my personal preference but that is not a deal breaker. If I get a year and hundreds of miles on them like I always expect, I'll consider it a win.

Bought it for walks in a rainy city
I live in LA where it doesn't rain all that much, and even when it does, you only walk a short distance to your car.But I was spending a month in Tokyo during its rainy season, and knew that I'd be doing a good amount of walking. So I searched for some shoes to help keep my feet dry. And these did the trick. It rained half the time, and I commuted on foot about 3/4 miles each way every day. Socks never got wet. Although my pant legs did ;)

Takes a long time to break in, but excellent and comfortable.
I've always found Merrells take a long time to break in and they will make your feet sore for a few days, they will feel a bit small on your feet if you order your usual size. But they are the most comfortable and long lasting shoes once broken in and I keep going back to them again and again over other brands.
