The worm gear is hardened steel and the blade drive gear is bronze.

Does the blade require the diamond-shaped knock-out hole? or is the center hole round?

Most replacement blades come with a round arbor center opening which must be knocked out so a diamond-shaped arbor center is exposed. Only blades with a diamond-shaped arbor center can be used on this saw.
