Fully updated and revised by James Penner and Emmanuel Melissaris, McCoubrey & White's Textbook on Jurisprudence clearly breaks down the complexities of this often daunting yet fascinating subject. Sophisticated ideas are explained concisely and with clarity, ensuring the reader is aware of the subtleties of the subject yet not overwhelmed. With chapters dedicated to both key concepts and leading theorists, this text takes a wide-ranging look at jurisprudence and places central ideas in context. In particular this text centres around one of the leading theorists, H.L.A Hart, and considers the landscape of jurisprudence in relation to his seminal The Concept of Law, looking at the key ideas which influenced him and considering the response to his work. Coverage of post-modern and feminist legal theory is also included, alongside discussion of key theorists such as Hobbes, Kant, and Rawls.Logically organised to support the topics commonly taught on jurisprudence and legal theory courses, this text provides an easy-to-follow and digestible account of this wide-ranging subject, making it the ideal companion text for further reading and research throughout your course. Review: Essential for anyone studying jurisprudence - Great content and good condition Review: Not suitable for new law students - Terrible and very difficult to comprehend. Possibly aimed at academics, certainly not at new law students. Expects you to have some prior knowledge to the subject of jurisprudence already, not ideal if you're learning jurisprudence for the first time. Uses unnecessary complex words which complicates an already complicated subject. It left me feeling very upset and even more confused than what I was before I picked up the book. Not good or helpful at all. It's a shame.

Absolute nightmare
Jurisprudence being a subject that a lot of law students struggle with, reading this textbook will only help to end that struggle in that it will make death seem a sweet alternative. The style of writing makes the content -- which is all there -- ten times more difficult to understand than it should be. It is written like an answer to an exam question whose author hasn't taken the recommended ten minutes reading and planing time before putting pen to paper. The authors jump around from topic to topic and repeatedly say that the importance or meaning of something 'will be revealed a little later', a writing device that may provide well-needed suspense in a mystery novel but only serves to deepen the mystery of jurisprudence here. It would amaze me that such badly written and unhelpful textbooks continue to be printed, updated, and recommended to students if it wasn't for the fact that the authors are professors at my university that endorses it so glowingly.

will not be useful for those new to the subject of law
This book although informative as it intends to be, will not be useful for those new to the subject of law. I myself find law (although difficult) interesting, alongside the way my lectures are presented, and the books that we are encouraged to read. However, by far, this has been the worst book i have ever come across. Many of the jargon, i am familiar with, but it would be entirely helpful if it would just go straight to point rather than throwing overly complicated and unnecessary words. I am a reader myself and i aim to read a book -even though it is not the very exciting chapter to begin with-hoping that the book may get better. But as i have said, this has been the worst yet. If you have a lot of time on your hands, VERY enthusiastic about the slur of jargon used by academics, this may be for you.

Dry read, needs more simplified terms.
Used this for my Jurisprudence class, this book is very dry and not an easy read. If an extended Glossary of Terms was included, it would be most helpful. Not all bold typed terms are defined in simplistic terms. The supplier was fast and efficient delivery.

"Kindle Edition" - Not Compatible with many Kindle Readers
Although Amazon will gladly sell you a Kindle edition, good luck actually getting it onto your Kindle reader - it is not compatible. It kind of defeats the purpose of buying a Kindle version to read while on the go if you have to read it on a PC using the Kindle app . . . order the hard-copy instead.
