I was starting with less than no knowledge in the subject and the books I wanted to use were over my head. I thought I'd give this version a try simply because the author had written both the kids and grownup dummies versions. She doesn't dumb-down the material. She just covers the basics more slowly and leaves out hefty details like schematics for the most part;>) The materials required were very inexpensive...just check multiple suppliers, pick one you like and order the list. I used Tayda and they shipped quickly from the US with all parts well labeled. (You can get a lot of things from Amazon but not one-stop shopping for budget beginner electronics!) I didn't spend even $30 and all the parts are reused in the author's grown-up version of Electronics For Dummies and most were also used in Make: Electronics, 2nd edition, as well. All the books are in color by the way so visual learners like me will find they pick up the material quickly and doing the this kids version first made understanding the next books' material a snap. I do recommend that if you are a kid, buy the color foam to cover the flashlight. Adult? Skip the foam, you most-likely won't be keeping the parts together;>) The author's writing style is easy to read and clear. She illustrates just about everything possible so following along and checking your work visually is easy! Do make the jumper wires to size (super easy) or spend $4 on a box of pre-made ones. IMHO, the Dupont cables with the solderless breadboard pins are fancy and even easier if you have the budget but they make it messy and annoying to check your work when you are just starting out.
