Not as "magical" as I was hoping
It is a great herbal book for children, as far as medicinal herbalism goes. The description makes it sound much more Pagan-influenced than it actually is; there isn't really anything here about the esoteric or "magical" correspondences of the herbs. Since my daughter has been begging to go to "witch school", I was hoping to indulge her fascination with medicinal and magical herbalism, but while I have other resources for the latter, they are not geared toward children like this one. Oh well.

Barely turned the pages...
...and this book is EVERYTHING. I mean, EVERYTHING. I'm starting an herbalist apprenticeship soon and my mom thought it'd be fun for my 2.5 year old to have a "textbook" of her own. Mountain Rose Herbs out of Oregon recommends this book, so I knew it must be a good one. It came yesterday so I've barely begun to see what's inside, but everything I've seen so far makes me just giddy! She may be a wee bit young to truly get everything out of it, but I anticipate she'll grow to love it more over time. She's already very aware/into herbs and tinctures and medicines galore, so the vocabulary is there. And I think as long as you're actively involving your little one in the world of herbs from the start they could certainly appreciate this book at a very young age! It has so many activities and recipes and stories about things that make my heart sing. I can't wait to delve into this with her! Would highly recommend!

A must have for the family! Wonderful book for children or beginners.
Absolutely LOVE this book! This book is fabulous for the beginner with herbs and children. It makes an EXCELLENT curriculum for homeschoolers or parents who just want to teach their children about healing with plants. This book is full of stories and recipes and explanations about herbs and how to use them. It is broken down so that it is informative yet fun and easy to take in. Not overwhelming or hard to understand or read. Any well read child of any age can pick this up and read it and comprehend it. The back has a lot of great resources for parents of any experience with herbs to use to find what remedy you might want to use for certain ailments and other great indexes. I have used them for teaching classes to parents and they loved it because it was so easy to understand. I seriously can't say enough about this book! It is also a great companion for the game Wildcraft Wildcraft! An Herbal Adventure Game, a cooperative board game If you want to get your family started in herbs and plant medicine and healing and natural wellness, check this book out! You won't be disappointed. Again as a homeschooling family this is also a wonderful addition to our library and "curriculum".

A great buy though
The. Book gives plenty of ways to use herbs for healing. Some of the herbs we found in our back yard growing as weeds! It inspired my 7 year old to garden and to be a more ecologically aware person. The one thing that really bothered me about the book is that there are no colored photos of the plants. I would not be able to depend on this book alone for identification purposes that are clearly needed for some of the uses of the plants listed in this book. A great buy though. Well worth it.

The book I wish I had as a child!
This book is everything I hoped for and more! It has stories to help remember the herb, which my daughter finds delightful. Simple recipes to try, adorable gnome Mr Greenleaf shows up throughout the book. There are even songs about the herbs, though I will have to find a piano or something to figure out the melody, as I'm no sight reader. I think there are neat things in the back of the book that cover taking care of the planet and the like, but I haven't gotten that far yet. We will probably be more likely to get to those when our garden dies back for the year and there aren't herbs at our disposal to learn about and use.

Perfect mix of recipes
This book has a great balance between recipes that use every household ingredients and those you have to specifically purchase. My little girl (9 years old) has really enjoyed going through the book to find readily available kitchen ingredients to help with her various ailments, and making a list of other items she would like to get at the herb store. Her first recipe was a cinnamon milk to help her sleep, and she truly enjoyed it. This deserves a place on every family's bookshelf!

Good for gardeners or those who like to do a bit of first aid
I gained a lot from this book. I want to grow some herbs and try some different teas. There was a lot of helpful information.Obviously, because it is written for children, the book is attractive and easy to read. Some of the advice was good for me. I went through the book and took notes on those that are most helpful to me or would have been when I was younger-those for healing or helping acne, for example. Another for colic which I didn't know of.An example how this book was helpful to me is that I looked up some recipes and added Fennel to my fish dishes after reading about its healing properties.

Go to herbs for kids
As a mama of 5, I reach for this herb book more than most of my others. I love that everything in it is suitable for children. The book has some amazing resources in the back too. It gives you a basic understanding of herbal energetics (cooling vs warming or neutral herbs) and how they relate to different illnesses. You can also search things based on herb or symptom. Super helpful and easy to navigate, with several handy recipes included. My reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that I don’t personally like the folklore/mystical stuff included. I just skip over and ignore those parts, but you should know they are lightly peppered throughout the book.

Not Just for Kids
This is an *amazing* book. It isn't just any old book about herbs, that simply lists information about them. The book starts out explaining the importance of plants, what a herb, spice, and weed are; how people first learned about herbs, and much more. Then the herbs come in. For each herb covered, the author talks about the properties, importance, and uses of it, a line drawing of it is included, and there are recipes for making remedies, teas, perfumes, tinctures, powders, oils, vapor rubs, toiletries, mouthwash, food, drinks, and other projects. There is also a story for each herb, and even songs for some of them. Little tid bits of information are peppered throughout the book. The line drawings are beautiful. There's information on growing a herb garden, a glossary, a quick guide to treating illnesses, information on dosages for children, and SO much more.16 herbs are covered in this book:-Lemon Balm-Fennel-Mullein-Garlic-Plantain-Chamomile-Comfrey-Slippery Elm-Echinacea-Licorice-Ginger-Elder-Calendula-Cinnamon-Dandelion-YarrowIt is certainly not exhaustive, but is an excellent introduction that I, as an adult, am finding not only extremely informative, but fun. It is written for children (I would say ages 4 or 5 and on up), but not childish. The author writes in a way that respects children and their intelligence and doesn't talk down to them. It is not colourful and flashy. The author invites the child to colour in the drawings himself/herself.The book is secular in nature and is a bit on the new-age side. For example, advice is given on how to pick herbs and the author says you should greet the plant and ask permission to pick it. If you 'feel' the plant has answered yes, you can go ahead. This is not a judgement, by the way, merely an observation of the tone of this book. This book is organised well, is visually appealing, and makes herbs exciting! I cannot recommend this book enough.

absolutely fantastic book!
Bought this for my 11 year old daughter. It is absolutely brilliant. Can't recommend highly enough. She loves it. It is jam packed with info on various herbs, how to use the herbs medicinally and cosmetically, including recipes for ointments, salves, lotions, etc. As well as songs, stories, interesting facts and tons of things to make. Brilliant book . Well worth the money. Can be used with younger children ( supported) right up to adult.

This is the best herb book I've ever seen
This is the best herb book I've ever seen. Ever. Excellent for children and adults-new-to-herbs alike, there are stories, anecdotes, recipes (for both internal and external use), songs and sufficient info on each herb discussed to give one a thorough grounding in the character of each, and what they can be used for. Absolutely recommend for anyone starting their journey with herbs.
