The New Hexagon: 52 Blocks to English Paper Piece

I have to admit that on first glance I was not sure what I thought of this book, but since that time I have become entranced! "The New Hexagon" is a well illustrated, well designed book. At first, when I looked at the hexagons, I sort of 'ho-hummed' , but when these humble blocks are considered in light of the wealth of glorious fabrics that we can use, the possibilities come alive and the 'ho-hum' factor evaporates! The image that I have attached is of one of the plainer hexagons (#9-Doris). The fabric does the work to make even plain blocks look spectacular! The author hosts a FaceBook Group "The New Hexagon- Millifiori Quilt Along". The hexagons in the book have been combined to create astounding 'rosettes' which really made the possibilities open up. The rosettes are composed of various hexagons from the book which are used to create large pairings and beautiful results. The 'rosettes' are paper pieces and the paper pieces are available through Paper Pieces. This book offers a lot of inspiration with endless possibilities! Yes, I am hooked on "The New Hexagon"!

I love this book so much. What you'll be doing with this book is making quilt blocks, but instead of them being square shaped they're hexagons. There are all different kinds of shapes inside of each hexagon, so you'll have lots of fun basting and putting together many different shapes. I bought the Kindle version, which was a big savings from the paperback version and it's great. There is a computer link in the book to each of the block templates and all you have to do is print the blocks you want to make out onto card stock, cut them out and start basting and putting them together. The author recommends basting with a glue stick, but I do it with thread the way I'm used to and it's working out great. There are a few projects in the back of the book, some using just a few blocks (or hexagons) and even a wall quilt that uses all the blocks in the book. If you love English Paper Piecing and are looking for a new and unique way to make hexagon shapes, you can't go wrong with this book.

Inspired by the many beautiful Millefiori quilts found online, I took the plunge and decided to take up English Paper Piecing. After absorbing everything I could about the technique from various blogs, I bought 'The New Hexagon' by Katja Marek to help inform my journey in a more organized way. Katja's book delivers. A solid overview of EPP technique sets the foundation for what is to come. And what is that? Fifty two wonderful hexagon blocks that can be pieced and configured in any way you wish. The book closes out with several very doable projects to get you going. Nice, but not awe-inspiring. If I have one criticism of the book it's that individual blocks as featured, when viewed in isolation, make it really hard to visualize how they can be combined to create something truly spectacular. Maybe I just haven't been doing EPP long enough to see the possibilities these blocks present. Fortunately though, Katja's website for her quilt shop sponsors several quilt alongs using the blocks from this book in creative ways. The Millefiori and Hex-plosion quilt alongs in particular demonstrate how these blocks can be combined to create something truly spectacular.

The New Hexagon by Katja Marek will take you on a fabulous English Paper Piecing journey. The 52 hexagon blocks are presented full size and you will make templates to make up those blocks. This is not a pattern book, but don't let that stop you from buying it. Every block is 3" and will fit together with every other block in the book so you can make a quilt of your own design. Or, you can follow along with Katja and her New Hexagon quilt along OR you can quilt along with Lisa Lucy and Kim McLean from Kaffe Fasset fame and their Glorious Hexagon project. Challenge yourself to fussy cut the pieces and create gorgeous designs.

I love this book. I am not normally a hand sewing person. But I thought i'd try EPP to have something to work on in the car or on days when I'm sick. I bought this book and joined Katja online free quilt along. I'm still on my first rosette but I'm really enjoying it so far. There are also a couple of patterns in the book I'd like to try once I'm done with her quilt a long. She was smart to do the quilt a long. Her online (Facebook and instagram) following is in the thousands and she has created a whole hand sewing community with her book. Really glad I bought it. I did um and ha about buying this book as I have many books and hexagon are really tedious to make a whole quilt with let alone pieced hexagon, but I like the idea of making one a week - no pressure and I really loved the rainbow idea. I really love the book it is written clearing the instructions are very easy to follow and adapt if one wants to. One of the best explained books j have come across. It is obvious that Katja knows her stuff and has broken it down into easy bites, very much a book that will get me into the sewing room

This book was required for her Millefiore Quilt Along so I reluctantly purchased it thinking it would be another quilt book that would just sit on the shelf. However this book is wonderful! It starts with easy blocks and ends with more complicated blocks and a page dedicated to each block. This book is great for the EPP beginner and for those that are experienced. The possibilities are amazing and this book will be used over and over again.

Ich habe diese Hexagons fertig im Netz gesehen und fand sie schön. Trotz englischer Sprache ist es durch die Bilder leicht verständlich. Die Hexagons sind mit 3cm Kantenlänge auch nicht zu klein und auch für Anfänger geeignet

There has been a lot of buzz recently about millifiori quilts and in 2015 there was a quilt along by Katja to make a millifiori quilt using the blocks from this book. I like this book because it takes the humble hexagon so often used in English Paper Piecing but gives it a twist - 52 twists to be precise. Very nicely laid out and easy to follow. The details for the millifiori quilt are on her website but you will need the book though. The only thing for me that lets the book down, and it is a small thing and it is a purely personal thing - glue! The book strongly advocated the use of fabric glue to stick your fabric to the papers instead of hand tacking. The simple traditional process of hand tacking and hand sewing is what I love about English Paper piecing so for me it feels a shame to advocate moving away from traditional methods. But it's purely a personal matter.

I have been waiting to get this book...creative, fun and beautiful! I love all the variations, the instructions are superb even for this newer sewer/quilter, and all the little projects you can do! Awesome! I also follow Katja Marek's Hexagone Millifiore quilt along, it's what inspired me to try this. I'm so glad I did :)
