An interesting and informative little book on Mantras.
For more than 7 decades I have been a voracious reader with interests ranging from the scientific to the esoteric. Even though I was somewhat familiar with Mantras; nevertheless, when I saw this concise 118-page hardcover book (A little bit of Mantras: An introduction to sacred sounds by Lily Cushman) I decided to purchase it. I found this to be an excellent basic volume about the power of mantras. The ten chapters cover a history of sacred sounds, the benefits of Mantras and what science says, physical mantra practice, daily mantra application and other informative chapters. Rating: 5 Stars. Well Done Book
It is nice to have a well studied Western person bring Sanskrit mantras to seekers, because they can demystify the concepts behind mantra yoga, and make them feel more accessible. I appreciate the inclusion of a link to download an expansion of what is in the book to further one's study. Besides the 13 Sanskrit mantras themselves, you get with each one a pronunciation guide, list of benefits, associated deity, literal meaning,Mythology & Folkore, and Practical applications. Surely enough to begin or continue a mantra practise.

Excellent introductory book on mantras
This is a good book for those interested in starting up a Mala practice. Although the book primarily deals with Hindu mantras some Buddhist mantras are discussed. The book also discusses how to implement a mantra practice. A good start for implementing a mantra practice.

Not 'little' at all!
Lily has created a lovely, deceptively 'little' book that can take a lifetime to absorb. I especially love the Resources/Practice Companion sections at the end, which include links to her glorious, sweet, deep chanting and other wonders. For everyone who wants to start a meditative mantra practice, as well as those of us who have been at it for years. Just jump in and open up!

Great info, bad editing.
5 stars for the information packed in this book however, there are a few mistakes that should have easily been noticed and fixed. For example on page 22-23 there is a whole paragraph copy and repeated in the middle that took me a minute to figure out. As well as misspellings such as missing an "n" in Krishna when it was repeated 2 other times in the same sentence. Otherwise it's a great book for a beginner learning about mantras and I plan on getting the accompanying workbook to go with it to try some of the mantras in written form.

I would give this book 100 stars.
Small book. Easy to read. I am not new to mantras but for such a small book it is Spiritual Dynamite. Really. Includes brief quotes from scientific studies supporting the practice as very worthwhile. Buy this one and do yourself a service. All you need to know. No waffle or personal opinions, no do's and don'ts. No religious bias, no ego. Particularly interesting is the info on studies done on the effect of the practice at the cellular and molecular level of the brain and body. Anyone can read it, no advanced prior knowledge required.

Clear, concise, perfect
An excellent little book, with clear explanations and useful tips about chanting. Suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike. I bought it after reading the other reviews and... those reviews were completely deserved. Loved it.

Buen libro, mal vendedor
El libro esta bueno, excelente para un principiante. Lamentablemente llego en mal estado: todo sucio por fuera, la portada y contraportada muy manchados y raspados. Ya me lo quedé, pero muy mal por el vendedor vender algo asi. Recomiendo el libro, no recomiendo vendedor
