Through the turbulent passage of time, graphic design—with its vivid, neat synthesis of image and idea—has distilled the spirit of each age. Surrounding us every minute of every day, from minimalist packaging to colorful adverts, smart environmental graphics to sleek interfaces: graphic design is as much about transmitting information as it is about reflecting society’s cultural aspirations and values. This second volume rounds off our in-depth exploration of graphic design, spanning from the 1960s until today. About 3,500 seminal designs from across the globe guide us in this visual map through contemporary history, from the establishment of the International Style to the rise of the groundbreaking digital age. Around 80 key pieces go under the microscope in detailed analyses besides 118 biographies of the era’s most important designers, including Massimo Vignelli (New York subway wayfinding system), Otl Aicher (Lufthansa identity), Paula Scher (Citibank brand identity), Neville Brody (The Face magazine), Kashiwa Sato (Uniqlo brand identity), and Stefan Sagmeister (handwriting posters). With his sweeping knowledge of the field, author Jens Müller curates the standout designs for each year alongside a running sequence of design milestones. Organized chronologically, each decade is prefaced by a succinct overview as well as a stunning visual timeline, offering a vivid display of the variety of graphic production in each decade as well as the global landscape which it at once described and defined. This collection of important graphic works represents a long-overdue reflection on the development of a creative field constantly changing and challenging itself. These key pieces act as coordinates through contemporary history, helping us trace the sheer influence of graphic design on our daily lives. Combined with Volume One—which spans from the field’s very beginnings until 1959—the tomes offer the most comprehensive exploration of graphic design to date. Review: Great inspiration! - This is a heavyyy book, but it's worth it! there's something about seeing the great posters that have been designed in real life prints, idk how to explain this, but it excites me to see the pictures of those great designs rather than on screen. Has a wide range of years to find inspiration from other great designs. A must buy for designers! Review: Great edition! - The book was well packaged and arrived in excellent condition.

Gorgeous big book for anyone into the history of graphic design and poster design
I love this book, have been wanting to own it since I first saw it in a local book store at a much higher price. The images are big and plentiful and gorgeous. Some have made complaints about there not being enough actual text but as more of a layman's aficionada of graphic design and less an actual graphic artist I think there is more than enough to give you some context and history while not sacrificing room for the beautiful images inside it. I bought the volume II but I will definitely buying Volume 1 as well. Just make sure you have room because the books are very big and very heavy!

Great design needs no sledgehammer
Taschen does it again with another solid compendium of the visually striking and often sublimely subtle world of ad media and design. Both volume 1 and now 2 are excellent for following the evolution of some truly genius designs, and how each period within the last century really had some game changing, and often radical ideas about getting a message across and nearly universally understood. If an item appears to be so simple that anyone could have come up with it; these books say "then why haven't they?" There would definitely be more volumes if it were the case.

If you intend to read this be forewarned it's not in English
When ordering, I failed to notice this was the multilingual edition. If you want to read this as well as view the images, be forewarned the text passages are in German!!! Otherwise, great book if you are in design.

Even more historical knowledge
The first volume was great. The second one is even better, especially since it mainly extends to the modern-day from the time the book was written. I highly recommend reading the first volume before this one to fully experience the rich history and evolution of graphic design.

A real treasure trove of knowledge.
The book’s quite heavy, but that’s because it’s packed with loads of text and photos. Would definitely recommend.

Great book, despite it missing its jacket
I loved this book the moment I saw it at a bookshop. Decided to purchase it via Amazon. the inside pages are in great condition and love the vibrancy of all the imagery throughout, but hate to say. Mine was delivered with fingerprints on the black textured matte finish of the cover and no jacket/dust cover like you see in the images online. It’s just a plain black cover instead. A little disappointed but worth it.
