My Dogs Love It ... And, I'm Saving Money
Have been feeding 100% raw for 5+ years. Decided to look for other sources when Darwins increased their prices. My local pet stores either can't keep the quantity I need in stock, or, have problems keeping their freezers running, so I started researching "home made" raw food diets. I now purchase beef, chicken, turkey and sometimes pork, from the grocery store, use my Kitchenaid stand mixer/attachment to grind, and mix with the Honest Kitchen. my dogs LOVE it. A few points:1. I use THK grain free varieties only. The base version (Preference) when serving fresh beef or pork. My dogs won't eat raw chicken so that is the only cooked meat I serve. I boil a few pounds of boneless chicken breasts, then run through a food grinder on pulse. I boil enough for two or three days and store in the refrigerator. It takes only 7 mins prepare their meals - which I appreciate on busy mornings.2. I supplement THK Beef, Chicken and Turkey mixes with additional fresh meat. Can't tell you why, I'm just not convinced there is enough meat in the mix alone. My dogs do seem to prefer the consistency of the meat varieties over the base mix, as evidenced by how long it takes them to finish their meals.3. For all of the mixes, I find that I have to feed my two Boxers more than the amounts recommended on the package. For example, for my 60 lb. female, the Preference guidelines suggest 1 cup of meat per day. I feed her one cup of meat mixed with one cup of Preference TWICE a day. She actually dropped a couple of pounds initially - so I monitor her and feed slightly more on the days when she has been more active than usual. My 80 lb. male - similar- feeding twice the recommended meat. He is older, less active and also dropped a few pounds...which is a good thing ; )3. I've noticed some variance in the consistency of the dry mix from box to box. My last box of Preference was predominantly green and finely ground - like oregano. My current box is full of large chunks of orange and yellow - like the consistency of dehydrated chunky vegetable soup mix. When mixed with water, the chunks remain large enough for my boy to spit out (onto the floor) the pieces he doesn't like. I contacted the company and learned that they source their ingredients from different suppliers and so the size of the products vary. The Honest Kitchen mills the food for the same length of time regardless of the starting size of the food - so start small, end with fine. Start large, end with course. Either way, the company states the same amount/ratio of food is in each box.4. I find that I am actually saving money feeding The Honest Kitchen compared to prepared raw. Darwins and Nature's Variety cost me $4.20 - $5 per pound -- and my two dogs were eating 4lbs of Darwins supplemented with grain free canned food, or 2.5 lbs of Nature's Variety, supplemented with canned, per day. Yup - $400+ per month to feed two dogs. Now, I buy meet from the grocery store on sale ($1.89 lb - $3.49 lb), and no longer need to supplement with canned food (though I do still keep canned in their diet on rotation). I stock up on THK whenever it is on sale.5. The last point worth mentioning is that feeding THK is much easier than frozen prepackaged raw. There is a noticeably 'gamey' smell to prepackaged raw that isn't present with fresh meat from the grocery store. I'm vegetarian and it has been a tough 5 years. The Honest Kitchen smells like dehydrated food, and when mixed with fresh meat - it really does not smell like dog food. Also clean up is a breeze compared to prepackaged raw - which would quickly begin to stink, and leave a fatty film in the bowls, requiring a soak in dawn dishwashing liquid to clean. Now, their bowls rinse clean - and when there are leftovers, there is no unpleasant smell.Highly recommend. I'm saving over $100 per month....AND feel much more confident that my dogs are eating wholesome, healthy, safe, fresh food.

Quality Premix
I've been trying all sorts of dehydrated fruits and veggies blends for dogs. This is my 3rd pick to date. Previously I was serving Dr.Harvey's brand. With them, depending on which you purchase you may need to present your dog with additional supplements to make it truly complete. Like Dr.Harvey's brand The Honest Kitchen, requires you to prep the mix with water before adding to your meat of choice. This option being grain free allows for me to add my own grains.I personally don't think my dog, an American Pitbull Terrier, likes this blend or that of Dr.Harvey's. On her owb she'd starve unless it was a bowl of meat only. That's just not optimal nutrition. Even with supplements, she would be lacking a fiber source and reasonable plant/grain based vitamins and supplements. That said this blend I make her eat via spoon feeding has been good to her.I usually rotate the proteins and grains around with these blends. This week I did chicken and herring with ground oats coupled with chicken liver and gizzards. I also added ground flaxseed and chia seeds. Lastly salmon oil is added to her food. I got about 6 to 8 days worth of food with the premix. There is a lot that need to be added into the premix for health's sake. I also present pork, beef, lamb and bison. She also gets small amounts of rice or potatoes. She's been pretty energetic on this premix. Her skin and coat looks good plus is quite soft. She gets all sorts of compliments when we are out so people do ask about her diet.Despite the fact this does come with supplements in the premix, I still give my girl a daily multivitamin considering it has probiotics. The only con I have with this is the fact the premix doesn't come with a measuring spoon. Luckily I have my own that was used to measure the recommended amount for my dog. Dr.Harvey includes a measuring cup in their bags.Price wise, I find this to be expensive. It comes up to a little over 100 dollars for the month and this is not includr the price of protein and supplements I buy. Dr.Harvey is no better with their price point.Lastly, I wish this company made trial sizes. This blend may not be well liked or tolerated so to spend 24 dollars plus on it without knowing if your dog will like it not the wisest.Overally, since I don't think this is cost effective, I will rotate this premix around with my own home made recipes. While it cheaper to buy this as buying all the listed ingredients outright will out cost this box, food doesn't need to be this complicated.Lastly, packaging is a waste. My order came in a huge box with some fairly thick cardboard. While it can be recycled, the packaging can be reduced

Even my pickiest dog gets super excited for dinner time!
I have been feeding various Honest Kitchen products for many, many years. My dogs love the dehydrated products and the Clusters. But they get so excited when they get the Base Mix. I make it with a variety of proteins - usually chicken or turkey. Their evening meal is the "home made Base Mix". Having human grade, healthy ingredients is so important to me. My dogs, and many previous foster dogs, have thrived on Honest Kitchen foods. Currently I use the clusters for their treats, they are that tasty to my gang. I mix a large batch of the Base Mix meals and freeze. It is easy to prepare (add the mix, water and your protein). Yes, it's a bit more work than opening a bag of kibble and scooping out "regular" dog food, but so worth it to know they are getting good, healthy minimally processed food. Overall the cost is much less than the premade refrigerated/frozen "homemade" home delivered foods. And the Base Mix is from a company I trust. My only issue is that it is often out of stock, so I have learned to plan ahead and make sure I have a good supply on hand. Even the pickiest of my 4 dogs is no longer picky!

Great product to use and never have to buy bagged kibble .
This human grade dehydrated dog food mix takes the worry out of making sure all their nutrients are there . Has all the nutrients and Iโve only to add my dogs protein. I ho to butcher and get blocks of steak trimmed meat cook it slightly pink freeze it and add a cup . My GSD loves it..

Incredible Delicious Product for Dogs
This product is so good! When you open the bag it smells like dried cabbage, but not strong bad odor itโs a sweet and delicious smell! In fact I wish there was something like this for humans. Anyway I will be buying this from now on. How I use it, I use a little more than a tablespoon and mix with some water so itโs not thick or too thin. I put at the bottom of her bowl. Then I add some cooked lean meat and sometimes some rice. The greens and fruit melt into the warm meat and my dog loves it. She is very picky and so I do have to change things up often. I can add this mix to any food I give her itโs so versatile. I have a small dog so thatโs why I use a little at each meal. In summary itโs an exceptional product. And if you didnโt know they are a B company which means they do things in a way that is pure and ethical.

Nice to have a base to work with ...
... but you will likely want to add more of what your pet really likes in their food. This has an oatmeal-like consistency that thickens quite a bit; I don't doubt the ingredients and it's a fine place to start, but it smells like alfalfa / food you might put out for livestock. Again, it's terrific to have a platform to add onto, but it's not appetizing by itself.

Perfect food for my dog!
I love The Honest Kitchen Preference grain free base mix for my 15 month old golden retriever. The mix is easy to use and I love adding my own, homemade, human grade protein and being able to vary the protein while knowing she is getting everything she needs. The "meat" added to many processed dog foods is scary at best. My dog weighs 60 pounds and I use 24 oz wide mouth mason jars to make one day's supply of base mix. 1 and 1/8 cups of mix with 1 and 2/3 cups of water. I sometimes use homemade broth instead of water. I mix the base mix the night before, then feed half of the base mix in the morning and the other half in the evening and add her protein and any other add ins on top of the base mix when I put it in her bowl. She loves this stuff and licks the bowl clean. My dog does eat everything, though. I recommend mixing it the night before and storing in the refrigerator as it didn't have a great consistency when just soaked for the suggested 3 minutes. My dog still ate it and loved it, but I prefer it to be thoroughly absorbed before she eats it. It does look a bit like a science experiment gone wrong. The picture shows the remaining half of her base mix after eating her breakfast. I also use the mason jars to measure and store one day's worth of protein. That way, anyone can feed the dog as it's just half of both jars in the morning and the remainder at night along with any add ins. I cook the meat in a big batch then divide it into one day's portions in the jars, freezing the extra jars. My pup is doing very well on this food and is lean, healthy and happy with a beautiful coat!

6 Days with HK: A Miracle Outcome ๐ฅน
TLDR; This sounds like I'm pitching an MLM but I'm not, I'm just really happy and I like to shour out products that work.My 2year old Boxer Malcolm's been dealing with some pancreatitis and/or pancreas-related diet struggles since Spring. In addition to eastern treatments, rx meds as necessary, I've been cooking for him - but the menu has been so narrow and limited that he started having skin issues. Despite his labs showing good levels of vitamins/minerals, I KNOW it was because he wasn't getting enough of the right nutrition by ratio of type, and in the fats/omegas department, but I felt like my hands were kind of tied as all omega supplements worth a dang are oil-suspended and that is a sure trigger. And he had failed every Rx diet ($$$). I wasn't ready to try a flavorless hydrolyzed Rx food until I exhausted all of my educational resources.I really set aside time to do a power-deep-dive in forums and FB groups and discovered Honest Kitchen. It's everything but the protein, which I'll still add myself. I got the fruit and veggie base, and the whole grains with fruit and veggie base. They have other blends that include meat, but I like the control of choosing my own meat.I'm so happy! I finally found something that Malcolm doesn't just tolerate, but seemingly thrives on. We're on day 6 and his skin is clear. I just did a poop-scoop and I see that he's got good, normal poops for the first time in as long as I can remember. And no gas. All this to say, I know that he feels good - which makes me feel great. ๐ฅนIf you've had a Boxer (or other belly-issue-prone breed), you know my joy in this moment! I wanted to shout it from the rooftops, maybe spare you some of the research efforts if this kind of situation finds its way into your life. I wish I had known about it, if it even existed, when Basil was struggling.Check out Honest Kitchen if your dog or cat can't seen to find a food that they do well with. It's not inexpensive, but scaled to a 30-day supply and compared to Rx food for the same number of days, it's at least 50% less expensive than the cheapest bag I've tried. And it's tasty, he loves eating again ๐ฅน๐ฅน๐ฅน

My fur baby loves this food.
I am so happy to have found this food. My girl always had fruit and veggies fresh with each meal. That is until the senior years hit. But I am thrilled to have her eating them again. I ordered the base mix, them cook up different proteins and she is happy and so am I. Plus, itโs human grade. I feel so good being able to get this food for my best friend.Thank you Honest KitchenI would have sent you a picture, but she simply refuses and turns her head away. Lol

Happy Golden Retriever!
My Golden Retriever just turned 8 years old. I've been feeding her HK Preference base mix and adding meat (80% meat/10% bone/10% offal mix) for over a year now. She gobbles it up. She doesn't suffer as many hot spots as before and she has lost about 18 lbs. Full and regular health check from vet ensures she is getting the right nutrients and all is as it should be for a dog of her age. proof is in her coat. While not always convenient (ESP when camping/boarding) I can always switch to the protien added version. Change up the proteins by adding fish, eggs... Turkey or lamb are favourites.Texture may be a big thing with your dog. So try different amounts of water to get a texture that works for you. Just remember to have lots of fresh water on hand!UPDATE September 1: While I still love this product, there is no longer a cost savings in purchasing it on Amazon. The price, up until recently, was $65.99 now it's $86.99. At par with my local pet shop. Buying at the pet shop also means a frequent buyers program which helps soften the blow. Online purchases do not qualify -- unless you are in the US and buy from HK themselves. Amazon - make it worth the online purchase and I'll be back.
