I mainly bought this collection for the greatest showman as this whole collection was only a little more expensive than buying it on its own. Also although i already had one other of these films i have been able to add the others to my collection so for me it was good value.

I got this set "used good condition" and saved pounds. The box set I got was very good. I am very happy that I chose this option over new, the only difference is new would have had cellophane on it.The film's are good too by the way.

The five musicals in this collection really are great... with the possible exception of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang." The five films collected here are diverse... ranging from popular modern musicals to classic musical blockbusters.Hugh Jackman shines as the morally dubious P.T. Barnum in "The Greatest Showman.""Moulin Rouge!" is Baz Lurhmann's hyper-active, overproduced, overstuffed, but visually stunning "jukebox musical." Moulin Rouge" exists outside of time, place, and space; as a dewy-eyed poet (Ewan McGregor) and his doomed love (Nicole Kidman) sing Elton John, Madonna, and practically everything in between. The poet is so stupid and love-sick, he'd be insufferable if it weren't for McGregor's charisma. Nicole Kidman does a fantastic job singing "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" swinging from a trapeze. "Moulin Rouge!" is too much over the top, emotionally and musically, but it's so fascinating and artfully done, you can't look away, either.It's no great surprise that the two 1960's musical blockbusters included here--"West Side Story" (1961) and "The Sound Of Music" (1965) were directed by Robert Wise. Wise knew how to make these musicals crackle with drama and cinematic style. Both films are emotionally resonant, and both won "Best Picture" and "Best Director" for Wise in their respective release years."West Side Story" (1961) was co-directed with brilliant choreographer Jerome Robbins. Not an easy or particularly happy experience for Wise, the cast, and crew; but the tension resulted in a propulsive, stunning fusion of music, dance, and drama. There are good reasons why "West Side Story" swept the Academy Awards with eleven wins. It's "Romeo And Juliet" set in Hell's Kitchen in NYC in the late 1950's. Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer are lovers Maria and Tony; caught in the cross-fires of a gang war, but supporting actors Rita Moreno and George Charkiris walked away with the critical raves and awards. Stephen Spielberg directed a respectable, and totally unnecessary, "remake." Skip it, and stick with the original classic.Although completely different in style and tone, Wise also directed "The Sound Of Music" (1965) as a drama with music, transforming Rodgers and Hammerstein's final musical into a breath-taking, and insanely popular and profitable, cinematic phenomenon. Wise's decision to shoot the film on location around Austria and Germany was particularly inspired; and Ted McCord's brilliant cinematography gives the story and songs more strength and drama.Austria itself (just before World War II) is a major character in the film. Maria (Julie Andrews) loves the Austrian Alps, nature and music. Her spirited nature gets her kicked out of a strict convent. She is sent off to, essentially, heal seven dysfunctional children, led with discipline by their dour father Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). Maria throws discipline away and heals the fractured family through fun and her love of music.Julie Andrews is all natural, glorious exuberance as Maria. Christopher Plummer, on the other hand, maintains a sarcastic and snarky demeanor throughout. While Julie Andrews remained remarkably good-natured about her stereotyped "governess next door" image, Plummer openly despised this film, calling it "The Sound Of Mucus", or "S&M" for short, for years; until he mellowed out and calmed down about it... in later years, of course.But not even Plummer's arrogant disinterest and dismissal dampens this film's extraordinary reach and resonance. By the time the family leaves Austria during the horrible Nazi Anschluss of 1938, get out your kleenex; you'll be crying buckets. The film won five Academy Awards, including "Best Picture" (1965), "Best Director" (Wise) and "Best Musical Scoring" (Irwin Kostal)."Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (1968) is more nightmare fuel than merry musical; a truly bizarre meeting between the production teams of the "James Bond" film franchise and "Mary Poppins " (1964). Jovial Dick Van Dyke plays an eccentric inventor who fixes up an old car for his kids. The revitalized car "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" has magical powers, and flies Van Dyke, lady friend Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes), and the kids off to a terrible Nazi-like German village where the King is a big adult baby who wants all the toys for himself. The children are kidnapped by the terrifying Child Catcher and... well... I still can't watch this film as an adult.Sally Ann Howes, who took the role that Julie Andrews wisely refused, called Truly Scrumptious, the "oldest musical virgin" in the genre. She was about 36-37 years old at the time of filming.
