Panasonic Portable AM/FM Radio, Battery Operated Analog Radio, AC Powered, Silver (RF-2400D)

I've had my radio for less than 24 hours so I cannot speak about durability. But I LOVE it so far! I'm 70 yrs young and I spend my days gardening in my big yard April to October. I like to listen to NPR or oldies music while I work. Dragging around a 100-ft extension cord has been tiresome during the last year. My similar, 28-yr-old battery-operated radio (paid $8 new) finally died last year. I've been looking for a replacement. I wanted a SIMPLE radio that could run on AA rechargeable batteries so I could always have a spare set charged. I wanted a large dial display, with a large tuning knob (NOT tiny buttons that take forever to tune and hurt my fingers) and a volume wheel (instead of those nasty little buttons). I wanted analog. I did not want Bluetooth, alarms, CD player, etc. Just an old-fashioned portable radio I could carry around—larger than an iPhone (so I can set it on the ground) yet lightweight, with a large handle, good, large speaker .This Panasonic RF-2400 is perfect. It's exactly what I wanted. I called Panasonic to ask a question and they have not made this radio since 2001 but told me there's no reason why Amazon's stock would not be good. IF you bought this radio and love it, you might want to buy another while Amazon still has stock. When I googled battery-operated portable radio, all the links were for boom boxes with CD players, Smart Phone chargers, Bluetooth and other things I don't need. Also, most of these radios had permanent, built-in batteries. If the battery ran out of juice, you'd have to plug it into a wall outlet and wait hours for it to recharge. So much for progress in the portable radio business. Other "portable" radios were solar and crank powered. The batteries on most didn't store the energy and died after 1-2 hours. I paid $110 + tax for a portable Sangean radio with both solar and internal rechargeable battery. It was also supposed to be a great weather band, short wave radio. Charger was missing. NEVER received anything but static from the short wave mode. Never got a weather band station, and the battery died after 1 hour. Seller never responded to my requests to return it. I also bought a little crank & solar radio, an Ambient Weather Adventurer radio. Piece of junk. Ran less than one hour and wouldn't recharge. That was an expensive piece of junk, too $83 plus tax. Unresponsive seller. My Panasonic has great sound--very clear and strong. I live in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, about a mile from a small airport. This radio does not get any interference from either airport or mountains. It pulls in stations that are 70-100 miles away for more. LOVE it! I hope it continues to work this well for many years.

I bought the Panasonic RF-2400 and it's proven to be one of the most dependable analog portables out there. The sound is surprisingly good for its size—clear AM/FM reception with a decent speaker that fills a small room without distortion at moderate volumes. The tuning dial is smooth and precise, and the analog pointer makes it easy to find stations quickly, even in fringe areas. It runs great on either AC power (cord is long enough to reach outlets comfortably) or batteries—I've used D-cells during outages, and it sips power so a fresh set lasts weeks of casual listening. No digital nonsense, no apps to update, just plug in or pop in batteries and it works every time. The build feels solid: sturdy plastic, good antenna (telescopic FM works well, and the built-in AM ferrite rod pulls in distant stations better than expected). It's not flashy—simple silver design, basic controls—but that's part of the appeal. No Bluetooth or extras to fail; it's pure radio. Reception in my area (suburban SoCal) has been excellent on both bands. For the price, it's unbeatable value if you want something simple, reliable, and long-lasting. This thing will probably outlive most modern gadgets. Highly recommend as a go-to emergency or everyday radio. 5 stars.

Very good product, good reception which was my issue with the handheld radios that fit in the palm (Sony). The cheap antennas would break off and then the reception is not as good. Always staticky. It is well-made and I love Panasonic products. Always have had very good success with their products over a Sony brand product.

I was in need of a radio that has good reception. The one I had didn't have good enough reception to pick up a local sports station. I thought all I needed was an internet radio but for the local NFL football game, the signal is blacked out. I bought this radio mainly because of the positive reviews here and on the internet about the radio's ability to pick up radio stations. In that area, the radio did not disappoint. When a station comes in clearly, a red led light turns on indicating that the station has a good signal. The sound on FM is amazing. The sound on AM could use some more tone but there is no way to change the tone. After doing a little research, I see that this radio is about 7 years old. But I guess it must still be good. Here is what I like and dislike of this radio: LIkes: ------ - does great job at picking up stations (this uses digital tuning technology) - runs on 4 aa batteries - had durable feel - red led lights up when tuning to a station that has good reception - amazing sound on FM Dislikes: ---------- - sound on AM could use more tone but no way to adjust tone - scale for station channel is off by about 20 units (for example, the scale marker for signal at AM 1000 shows about at 980) - I prefer a knob for volume control but this uses a wheel - only gray color option (does not come in black) Overall, if you looking for a radio that has very good reception, this is worth considering. I give the Panasonic RF-2400D portable radio 4 out of 5 stars.

Great radio for AM and FM. Great sound and can work on batteries too. Use it every morning. Great value

I've only had it one day after spending a week researching. I will update if it implodes! Originally I wanted a hand held MP3 player like the one I had (Scandisk). It (they) worked great for about 6 months and after replacing it only worked for 3 months. Finally I decided unless you want to spend over $100 to work out on you exercise equipment with music, spend time loading it off the computer etc. that maybe just a small radio would do. That's when the real work began. I read every review. I compromised big time because a sensible person wrote a great review for us partial Luddites...(G. Ritter von Olfers-Batock). The world of radio hardware is evaporating before the world of digital is fully ready. I don't want to spend time figuring out how to get music, when I used to just put the damn thing on and there it was! And that is exactly what this Panasonic does...well. I'm hoping it lasts but if it doesn't I'll just buy another ... a bargain even at $24.00...especially at $24. I have a $400 KLM 200 redwood two piece radio...the cats meow years ago...outside and inside antennas. This $24 Panasonic has a stronger clearer speaker. I only wish two things...that it was a bit smaller so I could balance it on my treadmill, and that the headphone sound was not monaural. I compromised, and am a happy camper. I'll plug the radio into the wall (yep that works, remember plugs? They don't cost you money replacing every three months like batteries) and play it off the terrific speaker built into it. It doesn't pick up AM stations all that well (but it does pick up the ones with the most ads!)....but I rarely listen to AM and it gets all the good FM stations very wll. The sound is clear as a bell, you can almost hear the violinist breathing! Now my only issue is I'm enjoying it so much in my bedroom I don't want to take it down to our "gym". BUT...it's light and portable and small enough (about the size of the old beach radios) to take it with me and put it back without a lot of effort. Almost all the MP3 type players (even the ones with hundreds of good reviews) had enough bad reviews to sound more legit than the 4 & 5 stars ones....a waste of money. Simple, good sound, classic design. My 7 yo wanted a radio for his room and this worked perfectly. Big dial to change stations, easy volume control, simple telescoping antenna. Worth the price

Bought this as a gift for my mother who just needs a small, light and reliable radio for wherever she is in the house. This radio is perfect! She loves it, it’s simple to set up and use. And of course, Panasonic is an overall great brand! I’m very happy.

This compact wall/battery powered single 4" speaker radio has great tone and volume control for its compact size. The digital FM lock keeps fiddly stations in tune and steady volume. Battery power apparently is long-lasting (not tested yet), so the radio is portable and works in power-failures! Tuning is easy and obvious with a highlighted bar and locks well. The volume, around the side and behind the tuning know is a bit of a nuisance as is the sliding on/off-FM-AM 'switch" which is a single glider above the tuner frequency bar, which takes getting used to because the radio is not heavy and one-handed on/off, FM, AM control takes a bit of practice. However, compared with radios generally, it is a bargain and a very good quality unit that works well even with weak radio signals.
