Reflections for Ragamuffins: Daily Devotions from the Writings of Brennan Manning

Brennan Manning is generally a good writer, and so this devotional based on excerpts his works is a cut above average. However, it's not perfect:a. Each day has a Scripture verse associated with an excerpt of Manning's writings. Sometimes, the point of the verse (or the verse's context) has little or nothing to do with the point of the excerpt. Admittedly, this is a problem with virtually all daily devotionals that pair single verses with someone's writing. This devotional does better than most. I've seen devotionals where verses are taken out of context really badly; e.g. the message of the passage (around the verse) is actually opposite the message of the author's own writing. There's nothing like that in this devotional. But, still, the verse selection could be improved.b. There are some mistakes in the Scripture references. A verse may be printed with a reference, but the reference numbers are off by a verse or a chapter.c. Manning is sometimes too wordy and theological, and it's hard to tell from the excerpt what he's talking about. He likes expounding on concepts with a lot of adjectives and synonyms. Sometimes he uses terms that we didn't know; they may be well known to Catholic monks, but not to us, so we occasionally had to Google them.All in all, this is a good, reliable devotional that has sparked some serious thinking.

I bought this book mostly for my geeky husband who doesn't do "recreational" reading. We both recently saw Brennan Manning in person and were blessed and encouraged. I didn't think my husband would read a full text as readily as this devotional. He is reading this book daily! My only complaint is that on occasion the comments contain deep theologial verbage without a whole lot of explanation (would've been in the longer texts?). My husband wouldn't keep reading, however, if it happened too often. A good little text if you want to get a taste of Manning's work. I prefer the regular whole texts to delve deeper, but this works for my hubby! Yay!

The book I received came with a different cover than the one listed although I'm sure it includes the same reflections. It was shipped quickly and is in good condition (not sure what it was advertised as).Brennan Manning is a favorite of mine... a favorite author and a favorite person to youtube when I'm needing inspiration.The readings are all pretty short (one page per day) but packed with a knowledge and understanding of God and His love for us.

From beginning to end this is an eye opening journey of Jesus promises and blessinsg

The dailies are short but very powerful. Manning gets what it's like to try to live this life in this place. I'm moved every morning.

Brennan Manning always makes me think. He believes that Jesus is our Savior and that by His blood we are saved, which is so right on. Brennan can make you ponder your thinking in each and every devotion or book I've ever read. I love that he writes showing that God is a God of love and wants to see each and everyone of us listed in the Lambs Book of Life. The world has lost a great man of God and Brennan Manning will be missed.

I really wanted to get back into doing a nightly devotion so I just perused Amazon for some good reviews. I bought this book and love it. At first it threw me off because it is a little deep, but I learned to love it. If you really want to reflect and not use the book to tell you what to think but instead let it guide you into your thoughts, this is the book to go with!

This is a new book for me but recognised the name of the author from meetings I had attended. It seems to be well written and thought provoking and I am looking forward to delving into the various daily readings.

This is a great way to start the day. Each daily reading makes you think. It's both challenging and encouraging. The love of God comes across so strongly. The books a real blessing, and I'm glad I bought a copy.

Arrived quickly and an interesting book of daily readings by a lovely Christian man who trusted in the grace of God.

Amazingly honest book about things we all struggle with in life.
